Hi I have just brought a Penn 950 ssm .I was wanting to know if its OK to spool it with Braid ,and if so ,will I gain much with casting distance ?
 Any help would be greatly appreciated

 I have been warned about the downsides to using braid for surfcasting/rockfishing ,as the rocks can easily cut or fray the braid ,how true is this (in realistic terms)
and since there is so many different types of braid ,and every one claims theirs is better ,is there one type that stands out for surfcasting ?

Fishbait, I have been using braid on a fixed spool reel for many years, firstly on a Shimano RXB 80, and currently on a couple of 6500B's. Hasn't been a problem so far, other than the first couple of meters of braid, getting a bit frayed. When this happens, I just cut it off and start again. I have never had it break, ever! I also found that using braid, did increase my casting distance, I put this down to less friction as the line passes through the rod eyes.

I use braid for all my reels and have never looked back since. Apart from rock-abrasion, I think that can be limited with a good shock leader. I use about 4-8metres. Be aware that I use a glove for casting as I will not like the braid to cut my fingers when loading up the rod.

However my main fear is if the braid wraps around my guides and when you cast, the guides will fly together with your sinker and all.

Other than that, bite-sensitivity is unparalleled.
