OK.....I've only tied 6 PR knots now and think i've got them pretty sweet after an awesome tutorial from Marcus at WS Lauries....anyhoo....just checking what the pros are doing....or even one of the Kapiti Kids will do in the event that no pros are available...Wink

1) When starting the PR knot do you go down toward the leader end (if so how long should this be?) then wrap back over and continue on  up toward the  leader tag end?

2) what is the recommended length of braid locks/twists around the leader for 30lb braid and 60lb supple leader? and does this change for varying line weights?

3) how many half hitches before the leader tag end?

4) how many half hitches over the mainline?

5) and how many Rizzuto finishing loops before pulling up tight?

all questions I should have asked Marcus, but was too blinded by the bling.

cheers y'all!!

Hi Kezza,

Have you seen this tutorial?

On the lighter braids such as the 30lb you mention, you should remove the centre pin in the bobbin reel.

Anyway, Chris' pics explain it very well.

CONFIDENCE: The feeling you have before fully understanding the situation.

Subtle Kezza, subtle. I'll bring the camera.
Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

Kezza, I'd prefer a 'tough trace' if using a uni knot to the solid ring. Less chance of the knot tightening up too much and crushing/cutting off on the solid ring whilst under load. Especially as some small solid rings are more like washers-flat and sharp. I find this is the go on 80lb gear anyway. Just thought I'd mention. Smile

if you use a lumo thimble you wont have any problems with knots pulling through the solid ring, you will also be able to see the damage that kingies sandpaper mouths are doing to the thimble and not your knot Wink

certainly a strong and thin diameter connection and for me at least one that I'd only tie up in preperation for an uncoming trip rather than one out there on a pitching boat.....

What are the experienced guys doing if your PR needs replacing out on the water?

it's taking me around 7 minutes to tie up the PR knot with my limited experience, but I think I'm doing them way too long - so with a bit more practise and refinement should be able to get it down sub 5mins.....is this about right?

practice makes perfectionWink or so im told.
should be able to get it down to 3-4min, just make sure that the end of the bobbin is touching the knot the whole time you are spinning it, you should feel the leader  trying to twist in your hands. If the bobbin is not hard against the trace when spinning you need to put an extra wrap around the bobbin arm.I use 5-6 turns usually for PE8 braid.
Easy to tie on boat at sea, just dont leave bobbin somewhere that it can roll away and through scuppersCry

I took this photo a wee while ago on the macro setting on my new camera. You can see on the inside of the solid ring that the 150lb Penn 10x is starting to go. Mind you, it had caught numerous Kingies to 20 kgs with the same PR knot used for 4 trips! I used to use thimbles and all that, but really it isn't needed IMHO. You can also use protectionEmbarrassed, such as plastic sleeving double wrapped around the solid ring. Again, too much fuss whilst out in the field IMHO. Apologies if this is slightly off topic but I have cabin fever bad. Cry
