Not 100% sure myself I know the other week I used the Swimming minnows (Gulp) and got constant hits on them until  the tails were gone then nothin nudda. Put on a new tail bang back into it...admittidly it was KY's and one annoyed ray.

I kind of wondered if it was that predator type fish were more attracted by the lure action than anything else....can't explain the ray so maybe that shoots that theory in the foot................

Same with the unsented Lumo Shads/ Swimming mullet at night I don't get many hits when they are not charged up.....buggered if I know Confused

I know what you're saying mate.
action, colour, scent & size in no order I guess draws a fishes attention? but what if you took one of the above away- scent, would it make much difference?

a whiff of smell might fire up a fussy "individual" or turn a few on?

For my two cents worthWink
If you just doing a do nothing retrieve along the bottom for gurnard and the like, then maybe scented baits might make a bit of a difference as the wee timid beasties have time to actually smell them. For the rest of the time when your actually working a bait for pelagics, naa its the action that catches there eye, from what I have seen fish tend to bite 1st and ask questions second ie. see it, chomp it, spit or swallowLOL... etc etc.

That could explain why some of those Gulp craps on a ledger rig when fished in the rod holder have done well for some people, especially as they have a similar action to a brick Tongue.

I normally buy the non-scented ones so I can use them while out trout fishing. They seem to work well. I suspect the fish are attracted to the motion and looks of the thing, just like how they often strike a spinner.

i too have a lot of unscented sp which i was going to use for trout as well. i used the unscented ones up the coromandel and had no luck on them at all. it all changed once i started using the scented ones so now for salt water i will always use scented baits. the unscented ones also work well for trout.

Have not tried the unscented ones yet but agree once the tail gone then the bites cease (except for the bothersome reef fish!). How do the unscented ones go pricewise? Are there good alternatives to the Gulps that could save a man a few bucks?

We need an expert like finatic to grace us with pearls of wisdom ...

That said, I think it stands to reason that scent is one of the attractants to fish. Let's face it, berley without the scent of oil is as good as useless - and what attracts a snapper to a dead pilchard Bait? Scent.
I rest my case.
Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

I do wander what Si's gonna do with 5 suitcases of the stuff, give half to me I reckon hehehe, but what about when the pillies and such go un-touched and non-scented soft baits get all the chicks?
it happens plenty..

no sure answers. I love this game!

I wonder if baitfish let off a certain scent when they are scared or sick. They say dogs can smell fear so would the same apply to predatory fishLOL?

Gulps works bludy well, theres no doubt about that, but don't last long and are dam expensive. There not my first choice when I choose a plastic to use. My favourite lure has a mild salt and garlic scent! though I think its the action of the lure not the scent that makes it so succesful.
I pick them in this order most of the time.

Size, action, colour, scent, shape

When fishing in the deep and the baits are getting hit on the fall, what good is scent ??when fishing the wash most fish hit it real quick soon as she drops under the surface, what good is scent ..In my limited experience its the colour and action i go for..The  fish under work ups will hit any thing, so i use a bright pink rubber that i got off Stormbringer they are strong as and out last the gulp bigtime.Another of stormbringers beauties is an anchovie replica that will go off in the BOP this summer i hope ...mmmm yellowfin on 14pd braid...So while i use gulp most of the time its not for the scent. Its for colour , action,  and availability...( cod only stocks berkley )The only scent i need comes in a bag labled burley..and a bottle labled corona( with a dash of lemon)Big%20smile
