One again I had the pleasure of the company of "The Snapper", we had an idea for a story on Barracoutta on fly in our minds when we set out... little did we know the breakthrough the day would bring.

The water temp had just hit high enough for the barracoutta to make themselves absent, not a bad thing. The Kings were on the reefs but the conditions started to get a bit dicey so we headed back to the harbor...

I have been working on catching the Kings on the sand  flats of the harbor here for some time but we had to put a few pieces of the puzzle together to  make it work... like clockwork they fell into place and it all became clear.

We anchored in a favored Bay and started our search on foot wading the sand flats... it took five minutes for the first to show and success was instantaneous....

For the rest of the info you will need to wait until the issue of a magazine comes out with the full story. Suffice to say I believe this to be a major breakthrough in SWF in NZ.

Hey Clark,
Congrats on the Flats kingfish'n, nothing like the smug grin after breaking new ground!
How far did that king run? As theres no depth i assume that they get into the backing Tongue

My fingers and toes are crossed for weather like that when i get there!!

Cheers

Good stuff! It doesn't come any better. Can't wait to read about it. Magnificent!!
There's more to fishing than catching fish - but catching fish is a big part of it.

I have been thinking about this for a day or two now and my head is still spinning about how much work went into not only getting that fish to take the lure, but then the battle that must have surely ensued from the strike point onwards. It must have been one hell of a fight. Not down and dirty like normal just screaming the line out close to the surface. I guess the only chase you could have given was trout fishing style.......run like hell to try to recover some lineBig%20smile. Not only that but then I started thinking ok if a 3 lb trout fights like a wet paper towel compared to a 3 lb kahawai, then , whats a (guess15lb) kingfish going to doOuch............Thats gotta be fun mate.

No secret about the where Strx7... Tauranga Harbor, that one on the Matakana side... but all of the flats in the harbor are holding Kings... the "secrets" are not the where, but the how....Wink
