Nice trip out looking for YFT off Mangawhai - things didnt go quite according to plan at the Mokes but some epic work ups in 100M on the way home made things interesting including my first encounter with a Dusky Whaler.

Awesome vid. Great day on the water. Well done.
Jeez, I am surprised that guy didn't snap your fish.
It gets a bit butt clenching when your only motor won't start. I had that experience a month or two ago. My stator failed. 1 other boat out and luckily he had the radio on.

Yeah I was fully expecting the whaler to come in and try to take it. My worst fear was that as I was netting the fish the shark may lunge and chew the pontoon. I think it swam off to check out some other activity.
I realised as my engine wouldnt turn over that I didnt have the emergency tool kit with the pull cord to manually start it so I learnt a bit of a lesson about carrying it on the boat....

Its those sort of mechanical dramas that prepare you for the worst. I did wonder if you had a rope start. Great backup. Any bit of rope would probably do at a push.
That shark would have been a bit scary if it headed to the boat.
Great footage and vid in general. Thanks for taking the time to make it and post it.

I saw some video of dusky whalers recently by South Seas Spearos, I didn't realise they were that common, or is that a recent thing?

Great viewing over a(nother) bad weather Easter weekend. Gonna say it, big gonnads as I have a small boat with same size motor and I'd never consider a trip like that, let alone solo - top marks :)

Yeah they aren't that common and they appear to be seasonal.
