For those gardeners who like really tasty tomatoes and fish fertiliser is a great fertiliser but really expensive to buy.

Trust me this is not something that will stink out the neighbourhood.

The basis of this is that natural lactobacillus bacteria decomposes the fish into fertiliser with billions of beneficial bacteria put into the soil. I have been doing this for a couple of months now and it definitely doesn't stink and works.

500gm minced up fish (3-4 yellowtail) old food processor is good.
1/3 of 500gm (3/4 cup) of raw sugar - really important ingredient.
3 tbs of sourdough starter or 4 opened capsules of lactobacillus from the Chemist
1.5 litres of un-chlorinated water - leave tap water in a bucket for a day.

Mix thoroughly and put into 2 litre milk bottle - must drill 1/8" hole in lid otherwise it WILL explode. I parked them next to the neighbours fence just in case but it doesn't smell.

Leave for 4 weeks or more, strain any lumps & filter to use in a watering can at 4tbs per 9 litre.

The sugar feeds the bacteria that breaks down the fish without smelling.

Sourdough Lactobacillus recipe

1/2tsp yeast
1tbs Wholemeal flour - this is the source of lactobacillus on the grain
1tbs water

Each day feed with flour & water BUT double the amounts each day.

so its 1tbs, then 2tbs then 4tbs then 8tbs by which time it is really active. This mixture can be split into 4tbs batches and frozen until needed.

thanks man, will give this a go as well

try this -
grow toms to 40cm high in a paper pot, harden off before planting
dig a deep wide pit, in goes whole fish frame, including guts head bones
tbs potash, 2 tbs epson salt, big handful crushed egg shells, compost
bury the tomato plant so only the top 10cm is above ground, then fill with soil
drown with water, then water again 30mins later
No watering for 2 weeks

The no watering is to manipulate the plant to think it will die of thirst, when it starts to wilt, it will send out flowers and try and reproduce before dying
When the first flowers appear, water and care for the plant as you usually would

I did this last season, except it rained here for 3 weeks after planting so the flower thing didnt happen as above.
The plants were healthy all season with no leaf die off or yellow leaves until 2 thirds thru the plants harvest, no sign of blight for entire season even tho these were planted where blight ripped into the previous seasons tomatoes
Tomatoes were on automated 2LPH drip emitters drinking 1 litre water every 3 days

edit:
no need to feed entire season, tbs potash 2tbs epson salt every month

Thanks, Rudy. as I am also a Westie I can give you a sample sourdough starter if you come round. This sourdough starter is the real thing and over 20 years old. I also use it to make bread too.

I generally do that with a fish head under each plant. I plant in those $6 42ltr flexi-tubs from Bunnings with drainage holes drilled 2" up the side - the idea is that the bottom of the tub is a saucer and prevents the mix drying out. Once its dried out it is hard to rehydrate the soil as the water runs straight through if holes are in the bottom.

The fish fertiliser is just the start of my feeding regime.

I have a couple of worm farms and the worm juice and a couple of trowels of worm compost goes into a Flexi-tub of water that has been de-chlorinated.
Then fed with 2 tbs raw sugar (feeds the good aerobic bacteria), 4tbs fish fertiliser (feeds the fungi) 1/2 cup of Epsom Salts and then use an aquarium bubbler to aerate the water. The good bacteria (from the gut of the worms) doubles every 20 minutes so after a couple of days (feed with 4 tbs sugar 2nd day) it is really active with instant fertiliser.

You can do the above with compost tea instead of the worm composts - check out youtube for more info - there is loads of it.

I should try it. I have a 200 litre drum of fish guts and water. It stinks and I'm not 100% sure it is any good. On the good news front after a few years in the barrel it doesn't stink so bad

I rem my parents doing something like with I think was sourdough starter that when I was a kid.
I have wondered for yrs/ decades what it was.

It was added to the compost bins...
A bin would get turned over.. moved from one to the other At the bottom all the rough  chopped up fish (spade) would get mixed with partly composted compost and starter.. and layered.

Rows dug over with fork, then a layer (1 to 2" thick) of  composted compost laid on top then the plants plant out in the soil below, pulling back holes in the compost.
Worms would pull the stuff down , rain would wash nutrients down.. mulch meant no weeds and soils doesnt dry out.

The no watering is to manipulate the plant to think it will die of thirst, when it starts to wilt, it will send out flowers and try and reproduce before dying
When the first flowers appear, water and care for the plant as you usually would

Thats an old school trick..works on most chops where the seed/ berry are being cropped.. pumpkins, peas, sweetcorn etc

This stuff really works. I am harvesting huge brocolli and cabbage at the moment and looking like good results on the tomatoes.

Still no smell after many months of fermenting in the sun.

Hi Steve,
Jeez, nearly a year ago you gave me your starter

Didn't do any of the fertilizer mixture that you showed me at your place, but...... done heaps of sourdough bread with your starter

I do a no-knead bread batter, baked in a crockpot
Mix, rise, pour off, bake, rest till room temp, eat
The result is hard crispy outside, hollow dull sound when tapped, soft to touch below the crust, nice & chewy, at its best when slightly toasted

absolutely fascinating - I have had a no dig garden for 5 years where I have only used a trowl a few inches to plant seedlings.
Proved extremely productive with broad beans growing 6 foot etc.
Have feed with worm juice from back door worm farm but the soil is so alive I do it just as a bonus. I’m on my 18th layer of mulch. Green (lawnclips weed chop and drop) then brown (hay, dead leaves, etc) and cardboard.  I don’t weed. Maybe pull one weed every month or so. But have been reading on foliage feeding I sober what dilution this would be... great organic feeding Joker thanks
