Demon JIgs - Baby Squid Lure

Steve...thanks very much for my Baby Squid Lure, she is certainly a piece of fine craftmenship and has fish catching ability written all over it. Your Baby Squid looks so real and very durable to boot.

I will be dangling it in front of our resident kingie population this coming weekend (competition), so will post pictures and results when I get back.

Our Kiwi albacore and skipjack are in BIG trouble this coming season! And if yellowfin turn up they had better watch themselves as well...

How should I rig this masterpiece Steve?...any manufacture suggestions?

No worries Kerren and your not alone. Another board member has a few of these hot Demon design(c) BS Lures so none of the local fish are safe it seems.

He also has a couple of other secret weapons (not used in NZ before I suspect) and I will leave that up to him to disclose if he wants to.

The best way to rig the Baby Squid Lure is using a small diameter clear or black tube (mono) guard through the wire eye and then crimp off using figure eight or single bore black crimps. Avoid ally crimps at all costs at both ends of your leader and especially for tuna (IHMO).

Make sure the loop is loose so that the lure can move around as needed otherwise it will inhibit it's slightly erratic (and very hot) trolling action.

In terms of trolling, run nothing less than a 3 oz BS Lure about the 4th bow wave back and if the sea get's choppy then just flatten your main line with a rubber band on to your reel handle.

Don't be surprised if they mesmerize you, because they do exactly that to me. They are a beautiful lure to watch as they roll off the back of a wave at 7-8 knots and smoke the daylights out of the water behind them..

We'll be running a few of these as singles and doubles, when we come over and to hook up with Rick P on our 5 day trip in Jan.

Can't wait for that date to arrive let me tell you.

Hi Steve

What's your reasoning for avoiding aluminium crimps. All the tuna I've ever caught have had ally crimps. Should I be catching more? Is this true for all tuna types?

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken

FishB I have noticed that larger fin, yellows and blues, can be real picky at times and I have it down to one of two elements, or even maybe both which they can see real easy.

(a) Leader type and thickess
(b) flashing crimps, especially the top end one away from the lure end.

Seems that my hook up rate has been better when I use dull crimps for these boys. Smaller tuna species
don't seem to be fussed.

That's it Barrie, maintain your strength and the element of surprise for those club members. Can't wait to hear what the replies are.

Will most likely be something along the lines of:

"What the ...... do you do with those?

Better send out a warning to those Puka as well.

They are on serious notice in my opinion given that I know what the secret weapons are... Will be bringing some of those across in January for me and the blokes to play with too.

I don't think crimp visibility at the lure end is an issue with standard skirted lures as the crimp at hook end is tucked behind the lure head or inside the skirt.  At the other end ... it should be well infront of the lure or even out of the water (rigger lift) that's one argument for a long "ish" leader ,  although if fishing `Only tuna with reasonably heavy gear enough to pull them to boatside without undue drama you can gaff without having to wire a short leader and this can be an advantage.

Steve what are your thoughts on hooksize affecting the bite rate on lures?

cheers dustin
