Here's a small reminder to clip the centre telson of all recreational caught crayfish. This rule has been in place for 3 years now and needs to be adhered to. Please remember to clip them before returning to the shore to avoid any embarrassing situations.

Not all areas require recreational to teson clip. Central area only requires you to clip the telson in the East Coast area that is also part of the CRA2, which is between Cape Runaway and East Cape.

Thanks Tzer, yes Cra 2 and Cra 5 require telson clipping.

So not needed in Whangarei then? 

I did a couple just in case and the crays responded so must be painful or at least they feel it.

No only between Te Arai Point (Auckland to Cape Runaway, Cape Runaway to East Cape lighthouse bothe are in area CRA2)

Some other areas also require you to telson clip so best to check each region you fish in.

So does drowing them before cooking. 
Telson clipping is just to identify recreational caught crayfish from commercially caught ones, this has been brought due to black market selling of crays
