Reminder of proposed changes to recreational rules for the CRA 2 rock lobster (crayfish) fishery

A reminder that Fisheries New Zealand is consulting on two measures proposed by the National Rock Lobster Management Group for recreational fishers in the CRA2 (Hauraki Gulf/Bay of Plenty) rock lobster fishery.

  • A reduction to the recreational daily bag limit from 6 to 3 spiny rock lobsters to help ensure recreational catch does not exceed the new 34-tonne recreational allowance.
  • The introduction of recreational telson (tail fan) clipping for spiny rock lobster to assist with minimising illegal take.

These measures follow on from significant reductions to the commercial and recreational catch allowances from 1 April this year to support a rebuild of this very important shared fishery.

We want your feedback on the proposals, which are detailed in the consultation document. The consultation runs from 7 November 2018 to 19 December 2018.

Thanks Paul.  Fisheries NZ is consulting now on proposals to change the bag limit in CRA 2.  Anyone can have their say.  There is support from the main fishing and diving organisations for a bag limit of 3 for a limited time.
A regulation change is 7 months away, so  the main fishing and diving organisations are supporting a voluntary reduction to 3 per person per day in the mean time.
 
We have been at the stakeholder meetings and had a good discussion about the introduction of Telson Clipping to idendify cray caught by recreational fishers. LegaSea does not support it because it will not impact the poachers mostly jest regular fishers who forget to clip.  Fisheries NZ have supplied no evidence that it will be effective in CRA 2, where abundance is near an all time low.
