Check out The Lateral Line on youTube - the Big Angry Fish boys. Several of their recent vids have been on the west/north side of the peninsula, accessed from the road north of Colville, right up to the dead end at Fletcher Bay.
The most recent, they hooked kingies off the beach at Port Jackson, right next to the carpark.
But other places along there are pretty rugged, and difficult to access, and you need to take stringent safety precautions.
On a trip i did up there, i found the easily accessible spots usually have someone on them, at least on weekends. Hard work can pay off.

Eastern side, there are lots of options, even close to some of the more popular holiday destinations. But again, the more easily accessed spots are more heavily fished. Goes without saying, really.
There are beach fishing options too, if that's more your thing. May be a bit hard at this time of year, though. I'm not familiar with that aspect of it.

I did a walk all the way along Opoutere Beach, and that is a stunning spot, particularly near the estuary entrance. At the right time, you'd pick up fish, i'm sure.
