John, a big thanks for those comments.
 So valuable.
We have been on 2 charters over the yrs, one booked the other spur of them moment took up a cancellation.
 1 one lazy skipper.
The other, gear in a mess, I even ended up at the bloody helm, as skipper sorting gear try to set up guests.. Me on the helm in waters never boated in before, other than a skippers coarse from the 1970s under my belt , nothing.
Not only that the gps was close to last century, maps out dated...and  paid updated navionics on my smart phone far more peace to my mind.

Yes the latter wife picked up her PB snapper, I did my PB king, but that was all that was caught for the day.

Over the years have chatted to many of you guys who head out on charters on a regular basis..

Know who to book and what you are doing.

We have fishing reports for harbours / areas.
Rather than "Charter Operators.. good ones"
A Charter Operator Reports section.

Treat this part of fishing same as boating, fly, land based, dive ,everything else in the sport

Having a 4 day break at Paihia next week & as don't fancy towing the boat there & back in the hope of the weather co operating am thinking of going on a charter.

Fairly flexible but not too expensive so imagine would be looking for a kingi or puka expedition & maybe with suitable gear supplied to save having to pack it up & back.

Any suggestions or recommendations ?

Hey crew.

So im coming to NZ for 3 weeks at xmas time. Haven't been there for 20 years. Im an avid fisher here in Sydney but yeh really want to get into the country a bit and catch some fish. I love good charter trips and have been on some **** ones. But a good one. Amazing. You learn so much. Catch quality over quantity every time.

I have a few questions. How bad is La Niña there? Here it is miserable. If I fly off to NZ and head to the bay of islands will I be sitting in a backpackers hostel watching it rain.

I am looking to jump on share charters, can't afford whole boats if I am here for 3 weeks. I want kings and more kings. Dont want to catch king terakhi Have all the gear. Top water rods and jigging stuff.

I haven't done the bay of islands so charter recommendation for there would be mad.

I haven't done Waiheke island so charter reconditions for there would be nice.

I was in the coromandel and fished the mussel farms but would like to see other areas like hot water beach and yeh reconditions around there.

I love the surf so Raglan sounds cool so reconditions around there.

Any other towns that you could recommend it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Check out this guy:  http://snapfishingventures.com/ I haven't met Nik in many years but he is the real deal

If it is kings you want I'd give Waiheke a miss, plenty there but I doubt there would be many kingfish specialists.

Phil Barchet also has a good reputation, I've never fished with him though:  https://www.facebook.com/phil.barchet

There will be many many more but you need to search for those who specialise in kingfish.

If you get hold of Coastal Fishing Charters, they operate out of East Cape which is at least 7 hours south of Auckland, he may have a crew looking for an extra. Arron Sargent is one of the best around: https://www.facebook.com/coastal.f.charters

Xmas in the BOI is great for kings as long as the baitschools are in, Fish are in the 8-15kg range and can stack up some good numbers days, but mainly livebaiting. Pacific Pirate with Derek, SpotX with Hamish, Dayz Out with Darren are all great options.
Bronzies can sometimes be a Pain in the arse but not normally too bad late dec, early jan but thats just the way it goes.
If you end up in the BOI and its raining then you can come and drink Beer in my garage, as long as you bring your own beer

Went on Profishonal charters out of Lyttleton. Good value at only $200 for four hour fishing at a spot two hours from the wharf. Catch was Grouper mostly. Or Hapuka for you North Island types.
