Well said Wetfish, I'm going to try my luck early Sat over in Little Akaloa simply beause Kaiks south swell is looking a little off putting. Anyone over that way is welcome to drop by for a beer if we're not out in the water. Small cream bach on the corner of Decanter Bay Road and the Warf Road.

Hope that goes well for ya L Akaloa.

Just had a chat to a mate in Kaiks and vis is closing in.  He went out this morning and it's not great and getting worse.  Prime time will be early tomorrow so am still going to head up to make the best of a bad job.  Fingers crossed though, as the best dive up there yet was when it was meant to be shyte so ya never know!

Myself and fd3s headed up to Kaiks yesterday, to go and see what we could see.  The light winds of the previous day and in the morning made us hopeful of some decent conditions despite Swellmap's prophesy of steep swells and gloomy vis.

Well on this occasion, Swellmap was bob-on the money.  It was shyte.

Between the tunnels: Rough
South bay: Rough
North bay: Calmer but vis looked shocking
Seal santuary: Rough and shocking vis

Not to be deterred, we jumped in at South Bay.  Mistake.  It took all of 5 minutes, 3 surging swells, & 1 lost dive flag to decide that enough was enough and time to get out.  Swimming with arms outstretched to avoid face-firsts into rocks sealed the deal.  Got a kina though, so not a complete waste.  We sucked that down on the beach in the rain whilst planning our next move.

Went to chew the fat over a cup of tea with Nige at Dive Kaikoura, and talked about some other spots we could try.  One sounded as if it might fit the bill, however it would involve a bit of a swim out to clearer water.  Feck it, we decided that we've come this far and both need the excercise, why not give it a go.  The swim out wasn't as bad as it looked, and when we reached the mark initial prospects on the first couple of dives looked positive.  Vis was poor, but had opened to 3 metres or so, and the presence of small butters and moki gave us something to look at.  Although surgey with a lot of white water, persistance paid off and I found a couple of beautiful cray holes.  They were around 30 bugs all upside down on the ceiling of one.  I grabbed a couple out of there, then speared a butter just as sea sickness - which had been gradually coming on - started to really take effect.  That was it, time to head back, and shyte if that swim wasn't 3 times longer heading in.

Still, mission successful and we've yet to be defeated by conditions.  It was good in that we opened our minds a little beyond the usual, and were well rewarded.  Headed back via Felixx's and smoked one of the crays - it was mint with a couple of cold ones to wash it down - highly reccommended!  Overall, a good way to spend a Saturday, that's for sure.

Weekend Report - By the useless Spearo!

Arrived at the a eastern bay on the peninsula around 11.00am. Was only a slight breeze and the slightest of chops and with the water looking blue and clear, the excitement started to build. We walked from the beach around the rocks to find the best looking kelpy, rocky area where we could slay some butters for tea!

Once kitted up, we went in only to find the first few metres to be murky as hell with visuals ranging from the end of ours noses to 2 metres tops. After shaking the initial 'im in the water, i'm going to be eaten by a shark' nerves, we ventured out the back of the kelp to try and find some vis.

We did a lot of diving to the bottom looking back at the edge of the weed bank, as this was the only option of getting a chance of nailing a fish. But the fish weren't there so we basically we just practicing holding our breaths for as long as possible.

After getting sick of the we went back into the kelp and concentrated in paua. There were hundreds of undersize ones but nothing big enough to take home. However, the process I nailed a large fat Butterfish, only to realise when i went to string it that is was a Razz!!!!

The tally for the day of things seen was
3 x Razz [1 shot by accident]
2 x Kina
100 x Paua
No butters or bluies seen....

We came to the conclusion that diving at the head of a bay, even tho it is easy access is totally crap and release that we must get to the heads/open water to foot it with the big fish and other sea creatures.

Another unsuccessful weekend diving.... :(

Any advice would be welcome as my mojo is low!

Well at least you got in there and got wet!  So that was Banks Peninsula yeah?  To shoot anything in tough conditions you've done a decent job.  Have to ask tho - what's a Razz?

Yeah that's them... or large spotties is the other term. I tell ya, when you have your eyes peeled for Butterfish, those Wrasse sure do morph into them right before your eyes!!

It was Little Akaloa, second bay round, had to walk by foot round the rocks but no big deal... the woman in the bach, right opposite the steps down to the beach said that where all the divers go.

We drove to Decanter Bay first which look premo too but we had to make a decision which ultimately could have been the wrong one. Anyone had a go in Decanter Bay?

I was hoping for Boulder Bay this weekend another southerly coming through this afternoon and with Taylor's looking a dirty as anything, I think the peninsula will be out for another 3 - 5 days at least! The swell looks mean and persistent for the next 5 days.

Oh well, gives me a chance to get back to the pub and engage in some serious drinking!

I went out Lyttelton Harbour with pomahaka on Weds eve and the vis out by the heads was complete poos so I didn't bother getting in, and these Southerly fronts won't be helping so agree with Wetfish that it'll be a while till it comes right.  Summer's over boys!

went out from lyttelton yesterday bout 9am and headed around to beacon rock for a look, but no luck there, so we headed off and ended up in pigeon bay, but as with everywere alse the vis was very ****, heaps of paua but all bout 1-2cm to small, so not to flash there. we ended up in Little Akaloa but again not to good. seen a nice blue moki but as allways i didnt have my gun, he was just siting there right in frount of me, very swet to see.

but that was bout it headed back to lyttelton had a close up look at some of the big ships in there. all n all was a good day out, some good spots out there if the vis was there.

cheers steve for the mont trip!!
