Myself and fd3s headed up to Kaiks yesterday, to go and see what we could see. The light winds of the previous day and in the morning made us hopeful of some decent conditions despite Swellmap's prophesy of steep swells and gloomy vis.
Well on this occasion, Swellmap was bob-on the money. It was shyte.
Between the tunnels: Rough
South bay: Rough
North bay: Calmer but vis looked shocking
Seal santuary: Rough and shocking vis
Not to be deterred, we jumped in at South Bay. Mistake. It took all of 5 minutes, 3 surging swells, & 1 lost dive flag to decide that enough was enough and time to get out. Swimming with arms outstretched to avoid face-firsts into rocks sealed the deal. Got a kina though, so not a complete waste. We sucked that down on the beach in the rain whilst planning our next move.
Went to chew the fat over a cup of tea with Nige at Dive Kaikoura, and talked about some other spots we could try. One sounded as if it might fit the bill, however it would involve a bit of a swim out to clearer water. Feck it, we decided that we've come this far and both need the excercise, why not give it a go. The swim out wasn't as bad as it looked, and when we reached the mark initial prospects on the first couple of dives looked positive. Vis was poor, but had opened to 3 metres or so, and the presence of small butters and moki gave us something to look at. Although surgey with a lot of white water, persistance paid off and I found a couple of beautiful cray holes. They were around 30 bugs all upside down on the ceiling of one. I grabbed a couple out of there, then speared a butter just as sea sickness - which had been gradually coming on - started to really take effect. That was it, time to head back, and shyte if that swim wasn't 3 times longer heading in.
Still, mission successful and we've yet to be defeated by conditions. It was good in that we opened our minds a little beyond the usual, and were well rewarded. Headed back via Felixx's and smoked one of the crays - it was mint with a couple of cold ones to wash it down - highly reccommended! Overall, a good way to spend a Saturday, that's for sure.
