Could not have thought of a worst place to dive then Kaikoura during a competition. I went almost as far as possible in the other direction to a pleasant bay in the outer sounds. Was barren of fish life, only saw a couple of Gurnards but was nice place to explore away from the crowds. Really need a boat to do the outer sounds justice.
First one I saw I thought it was dead, so I swam down to have a closer look and it swam away. Second one was cruising out of range. Made a few kina berley piles to see if I could attract any in but only spotties and a wrasse were interested in them. Next time I visit I might plant a proper 1kg burley or two and check on them every so often.
Kaikoura is a great place to dive (maybe to great for its own good), but it is normally very busy. Just thought it would be a bit chaotic with the added pressure of the competition.
I agree with Teezer, definitely not worth the trip, god awful place, wonder what all the fuss is about really
Any word on your belt RJ?
