The annual fish pins for the period 1 June 2001 to 30 May 2002 were as follows:
Snapper - 12.2 kg Colin Tarrant ( Chicks)
Kingfish - 30.0 kg Reid Quinlan ( Waihau Bay)
John Dory - 2.8kg Jared Rehm ( Mangawhai)
Trevally - 2.0 kg Daniel Daulton (Tiri)
All fish were taken on snorkly only and were landed unassisted.

Whats a reasonably priced gun to get you started, that would be suitable for new Zealand?
The guns we use are specialised and have plenty of power( you need all the power to punch a spear thru a Kingie or big snapper. Also the power good for range on scary fish eg Tarakihi)
We are having our next meeting this Thursday night in Auckland , North Shore , Rowing Club , Lake Pupuke 7pm and I will ask around for you. New , looking anywhere from 300-&600 bucks. Been diving on air for a few years but I really like the idea of free diving and spearfishing. I like the fact that you're hunting for them and can be quite selective about what you shoot (my assumptions anyway). I've also got a mate who's quite keen as he's been diving on air for years and wants a new challenge so if we decide to join a club yours will be the one we look up. Any make of gun you'd recomend? any to steer well clear of?

Hi JW. the good brands are all imported either from Italy (pICASSO),South Africa(Rob Allen) or France. You can make your own (mine is) but you still need to but the hand piece and endpiece. As I said you will get good advice from the "professionals " at Wild Blue but we would rather you and your mate ended up in our club( they will put the pressure on!)They have a very good beginners package that you should ask about.
Spearfishing is very selective and you are in a prime position watching the foodchain in action. Little mackeral being hunted by Dory , Kingies with you watching them, Snapper hunting is very similar to deer stalking . You are hunting the kelp"forests" for the trophy red. Also plenty of crays if you know where to look.We as a club do not target reef fish , mainly pelagic or semi pelagic fish.
