I know this forum is sponsored by SLAM but I just had to mention how the Bio-Baits from Go-Fish performed in Aussie out at the Great Barrier reef and more importantly in our own backyard at Waiheke over these last few winter days. Doing my bit for the environment in Aussie I only used non toxic Bio-degradable softbaits, so only Bio-Baits and Gulps were used as these were the only ones I used, and all manner of tropical species were caught , most with lots of teeth. The first thing you will notice about the Bio's is the thick paste gooh that they put in the packets, I will be asking Greg at Go-Fish if they can reduce this somewhat as it can make it a little slippery and messy getting them on the hooks and jigheads. That aside though the bait are fully scented throughout and hit the water running with scent oozzing out straight away, they have a great action if matched to the correct weight Jig head and hooks. It's hard to compare them to Gulp or anyother softbait for that matter because of their composition being a plastic that dosen't contain petrolium, and no one eles was using softbaits of my recent Aussie trip. They aren't a protein based product and they are reported as a non toxic bio-degradable softbait (as claimed by the manufacturer and accepted by the FDA in the USA). Second thing to stand out is they can take a good strike without falling apart on the first hit (unless that big 20lber gets it) as mentioned a lot of the species on the Reff had teeth and they stood up really well to the point where I was averaging 3-4 fish and I got the same result here in NZ on our local species, my best results being 8 fish before a bait change.
Some may see a down fall as they will still get hit by some of the unwanted species like Leatherjackets and Squid, but this only proved they will attract a good range and varity of fish.
The range at present is limit to 2 sizes and 1 shape as you would expect when first bringing a new product into the country, the 4" and 6" shads are currently available at Go-Fish and I believe another outlet is going to stock them south of the bridge. The colour range will be extended from 6 to 9 on future shipments to cover the some of gaps with some new and exciting choices available.
With our winter in full grips I have found that the smaller 4" Bio's are the bait size to go for around the shallows and reef structures when wash fishing. Snapper are in full winter mode and looking to feed on smaller baits when hungry and yes softbaits DO WORK IN WINTER, you just need to modify your tactics to suit, something of a hot topic at present.
In my own opinion if I had to rate them from 1-10 they would get an 8+, mainly because of the excess of gooh in the packets, this however is a minor thing and I'm sure it will be addressed, the other being the varity of shapes, it would be good to see a larger size and possably a few different shapes like a grub or poggy.
All in all they are a great softbait and as good as the best I've tried, they will be a great addition to the softbait market.
