Hi all,

for many years I've talked about getting back into fishing here in NZ, well I've finally made time and got myself a fly rod and some kit. I've also bought a light spinning rod for my Mrs.

We've never fished in NZ before and I was hoping to get a few pointers as to places to start in or around Auckland, Can anyone recommend somewhere with easy casting for beginners? I'd be happy with any fish particularly for my partner as if I can get her 'hooked' it'll make it easier for me to get out more often. I've read there's good perch fishing around, but I've never tackled them on flies before.

I assume I need a license here regardless of what I was targeting?

Any tips on flies to use too would be really really appreciated!! I brought my box of generic wets and nymphs (pheasant tails, hares ears, etc) from Ireland and a few minnow patterns I used to use for stocked rainbows.

Drive south to improve your chances of good fishing. I can't be more specific I'm afraid. Maybe the Hamilton area would be worth checking out for perch?

Perch are a gamefish in NZ, so you need a licence.

A few years ago I had some success catching trout from Pupuke. I fished from the rocks near the boat ramp at Sylvan Park with a small rubber softbait casting out and letting it hit the bottom then twitchy retrieve. Can’t remember what time of year. Maybe a warm summer evening might be productive with a dry or buzzer.
Oh what a smasher - two eggs and a rasher!

Why don't you try in the salt -flyfishing- here in Auckland.

Not a hell of a lot of trout around here, but plenty of rocky ledges and bays to perhaps find a Kahawai or snapper if you're lucky.

Just a thought.

Thanks guys,
I've might give Pupuke a go some evening when the weather improves. I've read good things about the Hunuas? I'm not after trophy fish and from IReland where a monster is about 0.5kg, I think I'll be entertained enough :D

I am keen to give salt fly a go in the summer, but I've never done anything like it before so I wouldnt have a clue where to start!

Parkinson’s Lake out near Kumeu is a nice small lake with a decent population of trout .
Fished it a bit during lockdowns and it was fun.
Must get there again soon.

I have tried round Pupuke and have heard of people catching there but i have tried a number of times and came up with nothing. Maybe a boat would be easier. There are plenty of course fish there.

As of Hunua I have had good luck there. it can be a bit hit and miss as it depends on wind etc but i have had good success catching 30cm trout. Mangatawhiri is the lake as the other one you need to drive all the way round so lot further (cant access by road shown on map in between)

I also do saltwater fly-fishing and it can be really successful but you would need bigger gear.

Let me know if you want any more info
