Looking to get a small gas BBQ for an island mish with my kids that I’m planning, but I’m also thinking about taking it on overnights and cooking fresh fillets on the baitboard in super calm sensible conditions. It’s a small boat, just over 5m and the baitboard is at the back, in front of the engine and above an alloy in-floor fuel tank. . Lots of boat in between baitboard and fuel tank, but still. Wondering if anyone has any bad experiences doing that and lived to tell me about it? I have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket onboard.

We have a bait board that connects to the gunnels  just inside the bimmini clears. Out of the wind and rain etc.
On that we put a std colmans 2 burner lpg  primus with a hot plate.
There is more than enough air gap underneath to not effect the plastic bait board.
Between the back of the bait board.. between the bimmini clear and frame, sits on the top of the gunnel,  I have a small sheet of acrylic off cut  that gets warm, and keeps heat off the clear.

Only difficulty (if could be called that, was had to put a brace leg ( length of electrical conduit) to support part of the weight when have the kettle  and or cast iron plate and cooking.

We run it off a small 2kg lpg bottle.

As long as you have it in a well ventilated area and away from any fuel tank breather there should be no issue....done that before with doing an overnighter, best fish I ever ate👍

We don't know what we don't need till we've got it

As someone that survived a fuel boat explosion can only advise you to think very carefully before operating any form of flame cooker aboard no matter how minimal the risk.

A 5 mtr boat with several pax on board ... don,t do it !!!!

Choose somewhere safe to go ashore, cook there & either transfer the food on board to eat or eat onshore which will afford more space making for a far more comfortable experience..

Your question is bound to evoke responses stating how they are comfortable using flame or sparks aboard a small boat but perhaps they should reflect on the possibility of an explosion regardless as can assure you is not something any one would want to experience ! anyone

That sort of thing is caused by leaks, not checking connections, bad storage etc. and assuming all is good...
Out of interest petrol fumes are far more likely to ignite than lpg due to the air/ fuel ratios needed to do so, and the band in which they do.

The danger is in ppl rather than the tools.

Maybe so but is of scant consolation if or when it happens.

Leaving aside the petrol, meths or lpg there will probably at times be cooking oil which is very prone to igniting during a short period of inattention aboard plus could be less than competent individuals on board trying to be helpful.

In any situation involving flame or sparks in the presence of explosive
liquids or gas etc. there is always the potential of an onboard explosion no matter how slight,

We used to overnight in a 5m open boat a few times a year. I never gave too much thought to the danger of petrol fumes....... I was always  more concerned about the lpg . Always double checking  that the cylinder was turned off when not cooking, especially when going to sleep.
Not wishing to minimise Bazza's experience, ignorance can be bliss !
