Good work HY. Consistent as always.

Yes this page thing is very annoying, i think it's a conspiracy to silence us yak fishers..... I see a few yakers have taken over the maukau harbor page 😜.
Got out on the boat with the family last Saturday but just couldn't find a quiet spot anywhere for a sofbait with the kids , so headed back to Motuihe where I had dropped the wife with little one. Counted 100 boats at Motuihe! Really not my thing so we came home to avoid the madness at ramp. After all the boat admin I couldn't be bothered loading up yak so enjoyed a few beers and stared at the boat and realized it might be time to let her go.
Anyways, heading out in the morning... excited as.

Well they say sometimes you've gotta go back to go forward so us Aucklanders yakers will have to continue this 2 steps back one step forward thing until who knows when ???.

Paddled out in the dark and things looked fishy. Turns spread out everywhere diving sporadically but that was where the fishyness ended. Was a hard 4hrs on the water for 5 snaps. Can't complain, mate got skunked and took off early at 9am. The softbait out the back dragging on the bottom got fish of the day at 40cm, the rest went 35cm.

It was tough going for me out there on Sunday. I headed off from Shakespear Regional Park early on Sunday morning, just after sunrise. Fished for 2.5 hours and managed 6 snapper. All were however around, or just under 30cm, so they all went back and I went home empty handed. I generally only keep fish if they are 33cm or over.

Maybe the older wiser fish are smart enough to avoid the softbaits. Last summer was similar, I got a lot of small snapper and only around 10% of what I caught were of a decent size that I could justify keeping.

It might be time to start livebaiting.

Fished Auckland inner harbour on Sat with a mate. The first hour, I sat there watching him catch snaps & piper for fresh baits, anchored only 10m away in 2.2m along a tide line
That nor easter was blowing 10kt plus from Birkenhead direction to us off Meola dog park, the odd white cap & breaking
Next thing, we see another kayaker further out, change course & head for us. I paddled away to another spot to try & catch fish
I watched this fala go almost on top of my mate, pulled his phone out to mark our spot, then anchor down current in my mates salmon berley trail.... dragged his anchor then anchored up current from my mate
I paddled back to where my mate was, waved a hello to the fala, no wave back in return
Was quite slow on the incoming, apart from a couple frisbees released (eagle rays) & undersize... then that fala left the scene
Change of tide to outgoing, bigger current.... my mate kept enough then buggared off & I finally got fish in the bin
4 snaps to 38 for me & mate got couple snaps to 48cm
Heaps of smalls to 31-32 going back... .was unusual at times, fish would pull line off the reel, head shake then fall off altogether on the way up, happened a few times to both of us
Best baits incoming was fresh macks, piper & frozen mullet, outgoing was definitely squid

Had some fun early this morning close to shore, big anchovy schools were moving through close to the beach, with some decent fish underneath. I caught a few nice eaters using my very light Okuma micro rod, swapping metal lures and softbaits.

I'm sure you've all seen this?

Pretty exciting stuff - I have seen a GWS from my kayak once in north channel but nowhere near as big as this one.

Whoa, change of undies required.  I think he managed that very well.  My choice would have been to head in towards the rocks.

Thought I would share this discussion off the Viking kayak fb page, same brand kayak with the fala & shark

So cool to see young kayak angler keep his head and remain articulate through a stressful predator encounter. I've experienced several big shark encounters in NZ waters over the decades, and I believe he did a good job. A key though, is to minimize vibration. To this end slow steady paddle strokes with no splash is important. This reduces the level of interest to the fish.
An important design feature of the original Reload (presumably remains with new models) is an electrical eddy-current neutral rudder system. By utilizing UHMWPE rudder cables, non metallic blade, a hinge pin electrically isolated from dissimilar metals, and keeping mounting inserts above the waterline, there is a vastly reduced electrical profile to keep the shark interested beyond its initial investigation.
Whenever there are mixed metals in seawater e.g. alloy headstock components and stainless hinge pin, crimps on stainless cables, stainless fasteners in brass inserts, there are inevitable electrical reactions that can mimic muscle activity of prey species.

would the sounder running not be putting enough of an electrical signal to keep the shark interested?

definitely. I could write a whole page on what I do, but as succinctly as possible:
1. Baits cut off, lures out of the water
2. Bixpy raised
3. Sounder off
4. VHF call to paddle buddies notifying the presence of a large predator. If solo, a general announcement on the chat channel for that area.
5. Move off with steady consistent no-splash paddle strokes. Key is STEADY and CONSISTENT, not erratic like wounded prey. For many this will mean spending time to focus on stroke rather than looking around for the fish. Every time you start swinging your head, your paddle strokes becomes uneven and erratic. We want to give the impression of not being interested or bothered by the sharks presence.

Interestingly, IMHO the Bixpy is NOT a good option in a shark encounter. In fact, the first thing I do if a large predator tuns up is raise my Bixpy from the water. The electrical fields around the motor and cables can mimic muscle activity of prey species, and may serve to keep the shark interested for longer than it would otherwise be.
This is also a probable reason many boaties experience sharks biting their props: the sacrificial zinc anode corrosion protection sets up electrical currents the shark can detect, so it bites on a slowly moving prop (out of gear / in neutral) to investigate what's going on.

Pt Chev couple hrs after work a few days ago, got a feed including this fala in 1.3m on 4kg mono setup, no trace, just spiders hitch double line using piper baits

Me & a mate did Pt Chev this morning, new spot, in the middle between Pt Chev & Te Atatu.
Fished this spot once 4 yrs ago, heard was doing good lately, so gave it a go
Easy feed, marked new spots to try out next time. Fresh macks & piper did the damage

Good work BB those are decent size fish for the inner harbor.

I was out at OP on Sunday morning, conditions were good and i was onsite before sunrise flicking softies. Unfortunately it was slow going with  lots of small throw backs. I'm not one to measure fish which usually means nothing under 35cm comes home, but the fishing has been tough this summer and i started measuring fish on Sunday and kept a few in the 33- 35 range. i fished from sunrise through to 1045am . I took 6 snaps home in the 33 - 40 cm range. much to my disappointment all the smaller fish were milky with one being uneatable. I've fished OP for over 10 years now and have noticed a great decline in fish size, quantity and species. Feb without fail was the month of anchovies and KY, huge ocean going ones up to 60cm. haven't caught a KY at OP for 2 years and no anchovies last year and nothing to be seen this year.... yet? Its easy to get caught up in the " good old days " mantra but a few years back  i kept a detailed diary of every trip out for 3 years, including tides, wind direction, fish caught , fish released including the catch of anyone that was with me. It reads pretty spectacularly and it was how i figured out patterns of where fish would be at what time of the year etc. Ive got some amazing photos too, of bags full of john dory, trevally and fat snapper. I'm not talking 20- 30 years ago I'm talking 5 - 7 years ago. It appears this fishery is on the down? Who else fishes this area? Orere Point. what's your thoughts? It would be great if there were some better ideas out there about how to record and document the areas we all fish so regularly. Id be happy to do something educational to then use my catch as evidence of what is actually happening in my fishery. doesn't seem to be any new ideas, just the same old. with tens of thousands of rec fishers on the Gulf surely a couple of hundred is all it would take to get a decent amount of data to take the correct action.

On a more positive note, my son turns 10 next month and I'm buying him a kayak!

I used to live in Manurewa and fished around that side of the firth a lot. I always found OP fired up later in the summer, and into Autumn - most of my best fishing in the hotter months jan/feb I would focus on the islands off KKB - karamurama, pakihi etc, in shallower water on the channel edges.

I have been living up in the HBC for about 8 years now, and this summer has been the slowest inshore snapper fishing I can remember in that time. I wonder if it is a cyclical thing, la nina/el nino or similar?

We are still seeing plenty of kahawai feeding on anchovies on the northern side of the peninsula anyway, and there are kings about.

Be interesting to see what others are finding down that way.

I went out for a King this morning, living the dream, it was dead flat, I could see ripples from bugs landing on the water, the conditions looked good for a King to see a Mac.
It took me 20 minutes to get a nice Mac, I bridle rigged him with a garden tie to a 7 recurve hook and paddled in close to the reef. 15 minutes later the rod bent over and I had my fish, a meter long hammerhead, bugger, I haven't forgotten the time a hammer jumped into my yak.
Definitely not a fan of the hammer, I changed to softbaiting and picked up some snapps, and kept a couple of nice 5-6 pound fish.
