I had a fun day floating around and catching a few fish. I was barely off the sand and kahawai were busting up around me, chasing what looked like white bait. I caught a few flicking soft baits in their direction.
I went out a bit further for the snapps, and got smoked by a really big fish, I was almost spooled when it bit me off, but it was exciting to hear the reel scream like that, I was using 20lb braid and trace on my stray line rig, and the drag was cranked up, so a big snap or shark, dunno, but it was fun:)

Thanks Hopkins, it was a fun day fishing.
For those who can get out this weekend, the waves and moon are favorable for catching a few from the yak.

Still got try your area, means a Okahu bay launch (fizz nasty) but got some painting do first.  Suprises how well the bays are fishing compared to the late 80s

Hmm should I borrow friends yak?probably not as last time spent more time in the water rather than on it.

Fished ok this arvo as well. 3 big kahawai, 3 pan sized snaps and five gurnard. No real big gurnard or snaps but the big kahawai made up for it especially first one which hooked on the gurnard rig on my little non dragged Bakelite alvey. Cat going to have one big kahawai filleted over next few days, the others filleted for bait, and heads frames and guts for berley next time out in boat. One of kahawai had large yellowtail mack in guts. Was bit rainy this arvo but quite pleasant and calm even few kms out. Was good paddle back in.

I harvested some nice carrots today, and two snapps which were bycatch, they swallowed my 5 recurves with cubes of kahawai, I released the others. But if a 10 pounder had turned up I would have taken him, as the last few big Winter snapps I got tasted great. Conditions were beautiful, but the fishing was a bit slow, there wasn't a kahawai to be seen...bloody jet skies.

A month or more between trips for me , was stuck at home sick as a dog over long weekend witnessing probably the best three days of winter ever!
So when a saw a window Sunday morning I was gone. Down to OP in the dark with no one in site, i was already very happy. Sick of cold feet I brought a small towel and dry socks to put on after launching, this nearly ended up with me going over board. With warm feet and sun on my face the fish came in straight away,   just lots of small ones between a few goodies. Managed to limit out over 2 hours with a bag of 35 - 50cm snaps. Got off the water just in time to miss the showers and strong winds.

Nice haul! Might drag the kayak out this weekend, I have been crook as for the last couple of weeks and trying to ramp up into a training block for the Auckland Marathon.

Nice fish Hopkins.
I try to get out once a week I suppose, or whenever the windows open...
The water visibility was good this morning, but further out there was a lot of weed. I fished with bait on the incoming tide, with a southerly blowing against the current, but  in the scheme of things it was a good day for the yak.
I kept a couple of snapps and some nice gurnard, and released plenty of fish under 35cm.
On the way back in I saw a lot of shearwaters and terns working out from Kennedy Park. I did see a few big schools of something on the sounder, but nothing touched my lures, which is why I use bait in winter, and thankfully I've still got a few kahawai left in the freezer.

Got 5 nice gurnard this arvo but cheated and took boat as needed a run. No decent snapper even with half yellowtail deployed but quite pleasant afternoon. And just finished couple of gurnard fillets for tea.

Good to hear you got a few of your beloved gurnies Shane, I know you like those pretty pectoral wings. Yesterday was a bit blowy for the yak, over 8kts is no fun for the old fellows.
As for snapps, when the water moves a snapp or two pass through, but passing traffic not residents I'd say, so a waiting game for elderly yakkers with time on their hands.
One of the 10 pounders I caught had bait cotton in its stomach...I don't use the stuff, so it could have been in close munching on a crabs and surfcasters bait? Dunno, boaties use the stuff too I suppose, but the snapps get around a bit, the biggest takes I've had got  away...I might even use berley next time if the wind and tide are going the same way.

Finally got out for a fish, seemed ages since I've been out to wet some lines
I fished east bastion reef on Sat afternoon 3-6pm
Plenty of fish, pretty much straight away, all undersize 28-31cm as many as you wanted

Its an unusual place to fish, similar to that of Meola reef, meaning, as the tide dropped, the tide flow direction would head in different directions.
At the start of the sesh, the tide was heading towards Ladies bay, then change its mind & head towards Takapuna followed by a back eddy then out towards Rangi lighthouse

The last 20mins I paddled over to the sth eastern end of the reef & finally got some fish in the bin, all around the 33cm size. Basically casting baits directly to the sunken reef.... squid best then fresh trev
Superb conditions out there, little bit bumpy on the surface with a slight ground swell coming in from Browns isl direction with a wicked sunset over north head

At ladies bay, one rock ledge had anglers almost shoulder to shoulder, there was that many of them rock fishing that place... didnt look like much was happening there

Hey ummmmm..... has anyone fished around where the old wharf used to be at St Heliers....apparently, dismantled before WW1
Some of the locals mentioned, you can still see where the old piles were at dead low spring tides.
I reckon further out, the old piles structure would make good fishing in the warmer months ?

Good luck with your prospecting Banana boat.
I was out yesterday, I drifted along the shore in the fog, close in, I had planned to go out further when the fog cleared but it never did, so I stayed in very close with my light on.
Lucky for me I picked up two small kahawai on a lure, then put out a stray line rig  with fresh kahawai on a recurve, killer bait, it got me diner.
I had a surprise visit, a shag flew in from the fog and climbed up on the back of my yak, impolite words were exchanged, but he just swam around and jumped up on the front of my yak, the poor blighter could have been going in circles for a while and needed a rest, that or he was just a cheeky prick.
I've never seen fog like yesterday's and probably won't be fishing in it again...

squid can be a pain when you’re after snapper, but free bait is free bait i guess

Have moved into a spot about 1km away from you Shane, south side.   Will head out for a fish tomorrow, how deep is the garden patch (at low tide)?

NN under the cliffs off St Leonards Friday morning just gone incoming tide, both meat & dry berley down.... got 2 for the bin then it stopped
Fluffed around searching for a better spot for the outgoing, marked some new structure for next time on my maps
Got a couple macks in the live bait torpedo
Both meat & dry berley down again, few more going into the bin, then the live bait rod tip started twitching with the odd big lunge on the rod then nothing, then back to light twitches again
What to do... all these thoughts go thru your mind eh
I slowly upped the livie, on the surface was this donkey of a trev, missed the hook & took the live mack..... and that was it for the day as it completely stopped
In hindsight, I should have left it down there, till its either on or nothing..... have caught a few JDs there before in the past on livies
Keepers 33-36cm, plenty of undersize going back in the incoming & outgoing, good day out in the end

Nice report of the trev taking your livie bb.
I was out on Sunday fishing with bait and berley on the incoming tide, it was the first time I've used berley this year, but it didn't do much, a hundred yards away I saw a flock of sea gulls having a feed...
I finished with the usual snapps and gurnard in the 35-40cm range, one of the gurnard missed the hook completely and lassoed itself on the trace, that was new. Anchoring and fishing with bait offers little fun for me, I've got to be going with the flow and flicking soft baits to enjoy it.
It got blowy coming back in, which rounded off a session of winter misery:)

About 12m is about right but can be deeper, sometimes 13m is good.  The best fishing is when you get that grey mud on anchor as holds little crabs they like to feed on.

I went soft baiting this morning, I found an old packet of motor oil curly tails, they were so old the rubber had gone green, but the fish liked them. On my first cast I thought I had a gurnard mouthing the soft bait, so I just let it eat it, then slowly tightened the line, but then a lot of weight came on and the reel screamed. I got some line back, but it went on another run and it was gone, the knot to my soft bait clip broke. That hasn't happened to me for a while, I change my traces and knots so often, but ouch... still it was good to know a decent fish was mooching about.
It was a beaut day for the yak, dead flat for a while, it was a pleasure to be out there, I kept a few nice eaters.
