Fished my old stomping grounds off pt chev - meola reef this morning
It can be really good fishing from now onwards till apr from westmere to te atatu up to hobsonville
The entire area would have recovered over winter spring time, from all the summer feeding the snaps did over the shellfish / worm beds along those mudflats and yet, it gets very little fishing pressure from anglers
Kept 4 snaps to 42cm, all on squid

The swell was a bit higher than forecast this morning, there were some nice  .4m waves barreling in. I sat out behind the break  waiting for a flat spot, and noticed a small flounder darting over the surface, I don't know if he was surfing or if he was about to be lunch, there were a number of fine looking mermaids body surfing the swell, but I picked a flat spot and didn't turtle, so I felt like a hero:).
I haven't had fish for a while so I took half a dozen, some of the fish I released had spawning bruises on their sides, but they should be good to go next time...

Dave just fyi I went for swim bout hour ago… terns all along Beach about km out working bait. Anyways there’s the intel but they’re more. Saw kayaker coming in to Sth end of beach… anyways still little waves coming in so walked along to guide angler in between channel and rocks, also pulled kayak up to car park once the wheels attached. Angler was a very nice woman. She had dinner. Fishes lures on penn vi softbait reels- 300 by looks. She let me know when I commented lnice gear” , that the reels were water proof. Running some pretty interesting micro lures. I didn’t ask to see fish. When got up to car park thanked me and said she could do rest including not helping lift yak on to her car as had system. She was very cool. Just in case  (immediately thought of you and chances of us meeting rather than you) …the kayak is smaller yellow one. Certainly inspired me to get out there again.

A nice update on the local Shane.
I've chatted to a few of the ladies yakking out of Campbells. One young lady anchored her small yellow yak on the reef, she didn't have a fish finder, she had berley out and was fishing with bait. We chatted for a bit, I told her where I had caught my snapps that day, and they looked a bit bigger than the ones she was feeding.
But a westerly gusting 10-15kts came up, when I got in to the beach I looked back and the yellow yak had moved out, but the wind had taken her a km or two out to Tiri, she would have had a hard slog coming back in, but there are no soft yakkers:) I'd be out today but I'm paying my dentist to torture me so I'll see how I go...

There was calm window yesterday afternoon to flick a few soft baits, but a squall came through at 5:00pm and it got nasty, nastier than forecast, 15kts+ I'd say. White caps were crashing over the yak, it was a relief to get back to the shore; a lovely summer's evening full of beach goers, you'd never guess from the beach what was going on out there, but I got my pannies and a dose of salt air.

Nice fish, photo really doesn’t do justice to those lovely colours I saw in bag when came across you, going for my evening swim.
Should have seen work up down here tonight that went from here down to kenedys later on . Bro was down for swim and reckons some reasonable kings in it crashing around. I saw it down off kenedys just after 6pm, was a big one.

Got couple of snapper in 30s and one kahawai this evening off campbells. Was good to go for paddle. Lot of little fish,  tried pilchards and micros jig both which worked well, but neither produced a result in terms of bigger snapper. Got sharked twice on pillies.  First bit through trace and second broke braid and seemed a bigger model so wasn’t keen to deploy large kahawai baits.  So scaled ikahawai and have saved it for next boat mission.

Good to hear you got out Shane, paddling the yak is good medicine, especially when the wind is below 6kts and the sharks are not hungry, having eaten the jet skiers.
I might get out on Monday, if that window stays open.

It was an 4:30am start at the Waitematā Harbour.  It’s been 4-5 years since I’ve fished this side of Auckland.  I’ve never fished this particular area, but was given great assistance from Sam.

Fortunately he knew where to weave throughout harbour, as it’s very difficult to see in the early hours of the morning.

The current was swift and we anchored in the channel.  The rig of choice for me was a strayline rig, a 8/0 circle hook, and a selection of fresh mullet, squid and salted mussels.

The bite was instant and we both caught a good feed.  Nothing big for me.  The fish varied from 36cm to 42cm.  My favourite eating size.  No signs of milky flesh.  The snapper are also not as fatty as the Manukau species, but the heads are just as tasty.

I was forewarned from Sam that if the wind is higher than 8 knots in the harbour, it can get very uncomfortable.  Fortunately for us, the conditions were calm.

Back to the boat ramp by 9am.  It was really good to fish a new spot.  A big shoutout to Sam and Banana Boat for the heads up.

Nice catch Schecter.
I went out for a short session this morning, the tide was coming in but the southerly wind at 7-8 kts was blowing against it, and it was a bit bumpy.
I wanted a few Macs to run as livies in close, but I couldn't find them, so I just drifted with my drogue out soft baiting; odd things fish, they weren't  taking my softbaits , so I tried  a small metal lure, a 30gm Diawa and that did the trick.

Dropping metal lures doesn't require much  skill, but I'll take what I'm given:), it's fun when they make the reel sing.
I didn't weigh the fish but the snapper scale says it should be 3.4kg, the fillets weighed about 1.2 kg, and my Chinese neighbor who knows how to cook took the head for a soup. It was a good day at the local patch, the 35cm fish at the top look tiny compared to the big fella, but those 40s are good eaters too.

It was dead flat yesterday morning so I paddled over to Motutapu, it's a long friggin way, there were very few boats on the water and few birds, just the occasional small hammerhead on the surface.
It took over three hours and I arrived at slack tide, so had to wait for the water to move to get some action, but then the wind picked up and I had a three hour return trip.
Having been there a few times, I know where and what kind of drifts work for me, but the 3+ hour return trip doesn't leave much time to fish, but it's a nice paddle with few other boats on the water,  I kept two pannies.
When I got back to the Bays the anchovies and birds were in full swing, but I wasn't:)

Well done Dave on making that journey, assume was no electrical assistance, it’s a long way to paddle, especially back in on an offshore wind, assume you at least came in on incoming tide. I have never done it but come out off here a long way on odd occasion but not that far!
Go there in boat regularly. Next time your welcome to come along as takes about 20 minutes from Castor. Would give us way more time get livies and deploy for kings which usually under or close to birds working.
Thanks for 2 snappers donated Saturday , fed us (wife and me) and cat enjoyed scraps.
Was a nice big work up off our local tonight, coming up to about 7pm.

Forgot to add, brother turtled down campbells Sth end on Sunday. And lost a light ugly stick rod and small bait runner. Went for snorkel after but couldn’t find it. Be good if someone finds it before someone’s foot finds the 7/0 hook attached to it.
We’re guys standing up surfing when I came in Saturday morning at low tide, very good waves…  all about timing the lull in between the sets and very satisfying to land yak on beach without incident.
