There were a few winter warriors out, no birds and few fish but plenty of waves and a couple of tangles, there's only one thing to do: love it.
I was a bit rusty, my yak came off its trolley on the footpath in the dark on my way back up the hill, bugger, it's good having another yak fishing nutter live down the road, thanks for the hand Shane:)
I'm not much chop with bait and anchor, but I got to try out my new dropper rigs, one worked ok, I caught pretty much everything on it: a couple of sharp Gama recurve 5s with 40lb fluro, which was stiff enough for the short traces to stick out a bit without getting caught on the main line. I used pillie cubes split in half on the small hooks, so one bite, hit or miss. I finished with some small snaps, a couple of kahawai and a few good gurnard.
It'd be nice to get out again in the year of the blow...

Counted 7 in that photo,,, a mcfetridge park pasting.. I need to retire my dropper rig , the one I had was not my best work, but I thought gurnard were dumb … mine was tied very badly compared to past more successful efforts… thanks for tips Dave on yours they need to be stiff  and short enough to stand off main trace but still supple enough for gurnard to suck in.. But your rig was clearly better , ruling out 500m apart spots and bait of choice,  also bigger circle hooks I m using than in past may not be helping.  Always thought gurnard game was all about finesse,  which I clearly forgot and was lacking in yesterday.
This gurnard fishing is alot like tennis, got to bring your A game, rather than participate.

Hi HY. Good gurnard session.
Can you post a pic of your dropper rig?
The ones I made I used 15pnd fluro. Maybe that was my mistake?

I use 18 kg -24 kg mono Brent. But trick is distances loops are from trace and sinker, I actually cut loops trending up and tie to single strand of mono, leave one slightly longer drifting down to sinker and top one shorter to putrude out about 4 inches. Not as easy to tie perfect ones as you’d  think, even though I tied quite a few. You usually know a good one once you’ve tied it. Hold it up and will look right. You want bottom hook leader close to sinker but still presenting a  tiny bit off sea floor once deployed at the angle of drift. The guys in Kaipara run a different rig , heavy sinker then  three droppers attached to a lighter sinker at end. Never tried that but guy spoke to today (seemed to know a bit re gurnard rigs) mentioned it how they fish over there. Seems overly complicated but each to their own.

Cheers Shane, will try with the thicker line and make sure dropper can reach the ground by sinker.
Waiting a on a calm weekend day to get out again.
I’m moving from Torbay to castor bay next month. Coming back to Campbells bay for my local.

Just in time for big gurnard run with cooler weather Brent. See you out there, although more likely to run into Dave, especially on beautiful calm days mid week.

This trace worked ok for me, I snelled the Gamakatsu 5 recurves with a bit of tinsel and a bead on a short trace of 40lb fluro.
Lighter fluro sounds good, if stiff enough to not wrap around the main trace, a sharp hook of any size seems to work.

I received a gift of someone's old tackle box with various odd items: fluro tubing, beads, clips, stuff I wouldn't buy myself but used. But hey simple traces without the bells and whistles work well I think. I'd say use what you've got, and if the trace catches fish it's a good one.
Looking at the picture of my trace, which actually worked ok, I might shorten the line to the sinker by an inch or two, so the bottom hook is closer to the mud.
I would have used pink tinsel if I had it.

Thanks both for the info. I’m seeing a combination of what you both do will make the ultimate gurnard rig.

I shortened my gurnard rig and took it out for a spin, conditions were beautiful, but I didn't find a gurnard school today, it may still be a bit early for them, I did catch a nice 10lb snap on the gurnard rig though, with a tiny cube of mullet for bait, I also got a ripper of a Kahawai and one gurnard, the neighbors are eating well, I don't need any more fish for a while.

Agreed very nice fish, must be a real mission handling a fish like that in a yak.

Thanks lads, yes Kandrew it's fun catching from the yak, big or small on lighter gear.
I suppose if your drag is frozen and you're slammed by a shark etc, you could go for a swim from the yak; sharks are a pain and best cut off.
But when the wind drops to zero, those rare occasions:), you really feel the ease of it all, the sheer pleasure of drifting, it's a great way to fish.
Middle of the day, slack tide, sunny, fish love it:)

Yeah Dave good answer to Kandrew, and good to see on our yak site Kerry.
Dave those sunny calm days seem far, far away at moment. Bloody good to see another big fish off here.  Used to more frequent but great to see few still out there.
Mate has a theory with all little fish in gulf we will get run of 5-8 lber s in about 5 years time. In lead up up hopefully more over 35 and 40cm . At moment inner gulf has plethora of 30cm we need to look after.. would rather take 2 x 40 cm plus fish than 5 in the low 30s. But is what it is.

I was happy the weather window opened up for the yak today.
The fishing was slow for a couple of hours but it came good. I caught another 10 pounder on my new gurnard rig, this time with an even smaller cube of Kahawai bait, I got one gurnard on my stray line rig using half a pillie.
This fish looks to be in superb condition, it should be a good eater, the 40cm snap above it looks tiny.

Another beauty Dave, and not a bad bycatch on the gurnard rig.

There were plenty of good sized kahawai to be had this morning, big sized schools were busting up the surface. I caught a few large fish and cut them down into trunks for the bait freezer, so far as I could see their stomachs were all empty, I don't know what they were chasing.
I caught a huge kahawai last week that had a very large Jack Mac head first in its stomach. No 10 pound snappers were caught today, but I got a few nice eaters, dunno where the gurnard are, somewhere else.
It was very calm and flat for much of the day, so a good day was had.
