The fishing was brutal today, with a big swell when I launched, I copped a few  over the yak. The water was full of weed, there was a lot of weed on the sounder between the 5-10 metre mark too, and rubbish, including someone's fence, but no fish, on the rare occasion I saw a small arch of fish they wouldn't bite, could have been the moon, the Waxing Gibbous is a bummer, I finished with a couple of 35cm snapps, but I worked for them.
Winter kicks off on Thursday, I await the gurnard and their pretty pectoral wings.

I saw large schools of snapps moving through my patch today, the fish were small but there were a lot of them, heading out to sea perhaps?
My Daiwa lure with a flutter did the damage, the snapps didn't want soft bait and real bait didn't fear much better, but this metal lure was a killer, I'd drop it on the school and bang, they were on before it hit the bottom. I lost count...dozens of fish, I just kept a few.
The last time I was out it was dead, it was after a lot of rain and the moon was a Waxing Gibbous, today is a Wanning Gibbous and it was very lively.
There was some swell when I launched, but it flattened out and became pleasant for a spell, but when I came back in a few sets of .5m came barrelling out of nowhere, but I enjoyed the ride.

Nice work Dave.Saw you come up past here and was going to open ranch slider and yell out. But couldn’t as have a kitten in here and is literally like living in Fort Knox with wife who is keeping it inside for month and then going to put an apple tracking device on it after that. At least she is not putting one on me. He is sliding down my legs now trying to sleep. Quite cute really. Smile

Thought you might have been out today, there was a nice little window for the yak.
Good idea putting collars on cats, they are as mad about catching birds as I am fish.
I've taken a couple of birds to the bird hospital, the neighbours cat eats a few and wounds the rest, although I found her collar on the drive under a tree the other day, don't know what happened there, but I took it inside and it sent the dog half mad, the dog barks at windows and is half mad already, but we've got something else in common, she likes fish.

His name is “ marlin” cause he is striped. I love birds too Dave. Hopefully training wife is doing in here is to catch mice. We have had very old cats in here last few years.. which leave the tame thrushes that will almost walk on my boots alone.
This thing/ kitten is likely bad for birds though, like I was on marlin as a young man.
Hopefully he calms down, as if wanders won’t last long on this road. Wife loves kitty and he cute for sure, a young fixed male cat. They can fix the sex bit but not sure about hunting bit. If he’s smart he’ll go down back into golf course and hunt rabbits.

The winter fishing hasn't quite arrived, but there are still a few pannies about.
The offshore squalls were a handful this afternoon reaching 20kts I'd say, but being offshore there was no surf break coming in, it was flat as a pancake.
My fishfinder conked out early so I was guessing a bit, I caught a few nice ones early on but released them thinking I might find bigger ones... I finished with a few snapper a kahawai and a gurnard.
I was hoping the afternoon fishing would be good but the wind was just too wild for the yak, Wednesday and Thursday are looking good...

Gee it was nice this morning, yak fishing is the best when the weather is great, the water and the light were stunning, even the seagulls sounded happy.
My fancy new Garmin clapped out and can't be fixed, so I fished with a dropper rig with a Gama 5 recurve and cubes of kahawai and pilchard, no fish finder and one rod with one hook, why didn't I think of that before:)

Well

Well that answers a certain question I now don’t need to ask you, re: if the gurnard are in?
Fish finders for fisherman like us Dave probably don’t need replacing.  Mine doesn’t work either, I reckon leave em on to look cool and don’t replace em  to save money in these hard times. Just don’t tell anyone they don’t work at beach and we’ll be right. I am going bit soft so my gurnard fishing might be boat based bit more this season. Plus can drink beer while doing it, which don’t do in yak. Cheers for the intel.

Funy things FFs,show sign and catch nothing,no sign and fish on.Must be my settings buggered if I know, set to medium arches. I guess gurnard would should as structure more than fish due to being bottom dwellers??

Yeah pretty sure technology is overrated, probably holds you back with marlin and gurnard. You can see gurnards on bottom here but only when anchored a while. Personally always turn fish finder off when anchored for snapper and gurnard. Puka if trying to stay over piece of foul in 200m yeah handy, or jigging 40m for kings off one side of a pin. A good fisho on local grounds fishing gurnard and snapper, shouldn’t need a sounder,  is nice to have but not necessary to secure boat or yak load of fish.

My low tech fishing didn't last long , the good people at Garmin and Burnsco have just given me a brand new Garmin 55cv, for which I am very grateful, I've now read the small print on the warranty:).
I was careful with the last one, bought six months ago, but this one will get the royal treatment, it's  heartening when companies follow through with backup service, I'd stopped expecting it, but Burnsco has pleasantly surprised me, thank you Burnsco!
I'm off fishing tomorrow with my split screen Garmin, with maps and sonar, it's a lot of fun but a complete luxury!

The terminals were all clean, I bought a Rob Fort cover for it and tried to keep it dry and clean after use, but the waves are wet and it rains...
I don't know why it stopped working, it was a beautiful day and it just turned off and wouldn't reboot, one of the guys at Burnsco thought that water had got into it? They took the unit and sent it away somewhere, Garmin I'd guess, then today called and said they had a new machine for me, so I'm very happy, I've got a second chance, but a yak fish finder will get splashed, so I'm a bit edgy about that. The Garmin 55 costs $850, it's a great unit but I would like a few years use out of it, we'll see...

I had a mid range Lowrance elite hdi that packed a sad like that, water ingress thru the outer casing, prolly thru the sd card lid..... bought the yak as 3rd owner with fishfinder & got 3yrs out of it

Ive had my Helix 7 for 3.5yrs, 3 of those years contained within the rob fort cover, seems to be ok
The biggest problem Ive read on the net is water ingress & damage to the terminals
On day 1 of the purchase of my Helix, I slapped on di-electric grease... havent touched it since then

If you have added maps on a micro sd card, it pays to use a wide strip of insulation tape over the lid thingy

That's a fancy piece of kit bb, the Helix 7 looks fine.
Good to hear that your dielectric grease fix has held up.
I take my ff off after each trip and clean the screen and plugs with ipa, it lives inside, the yak out, but it's what works that matters, not what seems like a good idea.
A couple of dealers told me they thought Garmin units were more durable for a yak than Lowrance, so I bought another Garmin, a 55 after owning a 4s, but thanks for the tip about tape, the SD looks like a vulnerable point. I've considered filling the socket with silicon, but wondered if altering the design: the sd card plug is sophisticated, could result in further problems, like keeping moisture in or voiding the warranty...but I'll give tape a go.

cleaning with ipa ?
Thats a new one, I can recommend Montheiths version of ipa, surely you're not using beer as a cleaner

Isopropyl alcohol IPA is a cleaning solvent, said to be good for electrical contacts, it evaporates.
India Pale Ale might make the sounder see double.
