Spent the last week working remotely from Mangawhai.
Conditions were average most of the week, but managed to get out for a fish before work on Friday.
A quick brekkie, then took the kayak trolley across the road to the estuary and was on the water within 30 mins of waking up.
Found a perfectly sized small ky in the estuary first cast on a tiny little 7g micro jig. Bridle rigged the ky and headed out towards the bar. Had to bring the livie back in shortly after as a big pod of dolphins came and escorted me out the estuary which was awesome to see them checking me out and racing me.
They are pretty smart and I didn't think they would take the livie but would hate to hook a dolphin..
The bar was flat as, started drifting and picked up a bigger ky for the smoker on the little jig, then a large gurnard on softbait which spat the hook when it reached the surface.

Then a pannie on softbait. All on my new light setup with 10lb braid/fluoro, loving the change down from 20lb.
After drifting for a good while and a couple undersize snaps later, my live bait reel started screaming and I grabbed it, anticipating a 50kg kingfish on the line before finding the tell tale dead weight of a John Dory, and it was a good sized one, can't complain about that.
Started paddling in to get back to work, with a couple cheeky casts en route. Trying to get a gurnard to tick off 4 species - I was casting, leaving the bail arm open and paddling opposite to drift direction - effectively making ~100m casts.
With the idea that it'd be easier to keep the SB on the bottom as I drift, doing a slow retrieve
It was on one of these "casts" that I hooked up and still had about 70m of line out, so it was hard to tell if it was a big fish or just lots of line drag in the water.
Taking it easy on the 10lb line, I got more over the top of the fish it started feeling more like a snapper and doing some big runs. Got it up and it was a decent size. Nearly made me late for work though!

Very happy with that quick morning trip, back home in time for an 8.45 meeting. And JD for lunch, stoked as
