Thanks guys!!! . Any recommendations for rubbers? I'm also looking at a 90cm Rob Allen Scorpia on Wild Blue.

Just buy a 100cm gun. you can use 16mm and then upgrade to 20mm rubbers but it is about technique. You will be able to load a 1.4 with 20mm rubbers with the correct technique. Don't overthink it. Take a look at the Freedivers guns, cheaper than RA and fantastic quality...

I'm in the market for my first gun after using a polespear for a year. Would a 110cm Freedivers Protege be a good gun for Wellington diving? I'd like to have the option of shooting kingis, would a 110 be powerful enough?

Yeah, as John Dory said, check out the NZ Spearo Forum on facebook. There's some good stuff goin on there, & it's more active than this forum, but there's a few trolls active on there. By & large a really decent forum though.

I might have lied a little. Good poles are probably a bit more expensive than a Freediver gun but there's not much you can't take with a decent set up and can always go breakaway if you're after kingis in summer.

I've used a gun in the past, but currently only use a relatively cheap 2m pole spear, rarely miss (but quick to reload if i do) and come back with same quantity of fish as my mates who use guns. If you make slow movements, don't rush and avoid staring directly at the fish i find it pretty easy to get right up to them - even let them come to you. Plus if you become proficient with a sling then you'll find the same hunting skills are transferable using a gun.....
