maybe try a 90cm gun , but go to a shop an try and see it you can load it first, whatever you can load really , then shoot everything you see

I can say for sure that 12 year old me would definitely not have been able to load my 120 Caranx with the 20mm rubber

Just buy a 100cm gun. you can use 16mm and then upgrade to 20mm rubbers but it is about technique. You will be able to load a 1.4 with 20mm rubbers with the correct technique. Don't overthink it. Take a look at the Freedivers guns, cheaper than RA and fantastic quality...

At 12 yrs old I would suggest looking at a 100cm gun as a starting point = or maybe a 110cm gun if you can suss the loading technique.

My 16 yr old son is using my old 110cm Freedivers and sussed loading it with a standard 20mm rubber on it about a year ago (he hadn't really tried too much before then though).  I got a second hand (used twice before I bought it)110cm Freedivers gun for my 15 yr old nephew as a Christmas present and my other nephew (14 now) has had a 110cm gun for about a year - he struggled to load it at first but has it sorted now.

Go to a specialist Spearo shop and get them to show you the loading technique.  Any of the shops in Auckland (Ocean Hunter, Wild Blue / Splash, or Wettie ) will sort you out.

Ocean Hunter sell Freedivers, Wild Blue / Splash  = Rob Allen and Wettie do "Wettie Nybrid" and Omer

Hey I'm enjoying the wealth of information on here but wondering if there are any other spearfishing/freediving forums around worth a peek, especially NZ specific ones but any info is good info.
Also wondering how many sizes do you need to allow for say 3mm neoprene socks i have a pair of cressi 3000LD fins atm but they are a skin tight fit and would be keen to get some with allowance for some socks.

There's "NZ spearo forum" on Facebook, worth a look. I prefer this forum though better discussion.

I'm in the market for my first gun after using a polespear for a year. Would a 110cm Freedivers Protege be a good gun for Wellington diving? I'd like to have the option of shooting kingis, would a 110 be powerful enough?

I've shot a few kingfish with a 110cm gun (Freedivers as it happens).  Just make sure you are close ish and don't take the shot unless you are certain of a good holding shot.

If you're a geek and like over the top spearo tech talk (people making a science out of a stick with a rubbersling) try the US forum spearboard. Lots of information, but take with a grain of salt.

If you're in the market for new foot pockets, always go for a number bigger. I'm 41 regular size but my pockets are 43/44. In summer I'm wearing 3mm socks (which are loose, but better than a tight fit) and in colder weather spot on 5mm.

Yeah, as John Dory said, check out the NZ Spearo Forum on facebook. There's some good stuff goin on there, & it's more active than this forum, but there's a few trolls active on there. By & large a really decent forum though.

John Dory, a 110 would be a good option for around Wellington. Much bigger is generally goin to be overkill unless you're goin out specifically targeting kings. A 110 is a good all rounder, but will deal to kings no worries as long as you focus on proper shot placement.

If you've been doing well with the pole then why not get a new gatku or riffe for about the same price as a new gun? I'll be keen to meet up then and show you a few spots. It's hard finding keen pole dancers in wellington.

I might have lied a little. Good poles are probably a bit more expensive than a Freediver gun but there's not much you can't take with a decent set up and can always go breakaway if you're after kingis in summer.

Cheers for that harrison but I had my heart set on a gun after having a go with my mate's. I haven't really been doing well with my cheap pole... it's rare for me to come home with a fish heh. The thing I liked about using my mate's gun was the extra range, I've seen tons of awesome fish that I couldn't get close enough to for the pole to be viable.

I've used a gun in the past, but currently only use a relatively cheap 2m pole spear, rarely miss (but quick to reload if i do) and come back with same quantity of fish as my mates who use guns. If you make slow movements, don't rush and avoid staring directly at the fish i find it pretty easy to get right up to them - even let them come to you. Plus if you become proficient with a sling then you'll find the same hunting skills are transferable using a gun.....

Here's a tip for anyone that doesn't like their own face.  Grab a big Kina in each hand as you start your descent and then as you get deeper and need to equalize more just completely forget about the Kina in your hands and push them in your own face when you try to pinch your nose.  this tip ought to only be used by the truely ugly so that will exclude a fair few of you lot but still - it might suit someone... Disapprove
