I thought the ray was just after the fish I'd speared, but when I got out onto a rock I left the fish on the float line in the water and the ray didn't try and eat the fish then. It came right up to me when I was on the rock too. Starting to think it was just messing with me haha.

Not going to lie I pood myself a bit

Just been doing a bit a internetting and I see there are some roller guns around. Does anyone here use them? Or were they just a fad?

My mate uses one on occasion . A Beuchat Marlin Revolution. I wouldn't put my hand in front of it if it was loaded. I have seen him shoot kingfish and snapper with it.

I do not have the technical background to provide any further comment on this, but the old hunting adage of 'the best gun for shooting a deer is the one you have in your hands at the time' may have some application for spearfishing also.

I am sure discussion on the length of the gun, power, and complexity of use may now ensue...

Don't think they're a fad. I imagine them to be quite useful in kelp forrests, whitewash and anywhere else you'd want maneuverability without missing out on punchyness. Go and get one – reports please.

Thanks for the replies. Dont see too many for sale in NZ so was wondering if they are as good as some people advocate. Would be great to hear from someone that does use a roller.

I think they get used a lot more in states, I remember somebody posted a link to spearboard a while back: http://www.spearboard.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12

Try putting this into google... site:www.spearboard.com roller gun

They look cool and are probably great for power to size. I just don't like to over complicate things; 3 rubbers on one gun just makes it 3x more likely to break a rubber...

I wonder how much accuracy is affected by recoil, in particular by the barrel rotating about the fulcrum (handle). You could make a delayed recoil speargun based on the roller design by flinging mass back towards the handle as the spear was accelerated. Still need to deal with slowing that mass down again, but you could postpone barrel movement it 'till the spear had left. Just saying.

Roller guns already do suppress recoil a bit because the mass of rubber isn't negligible and a good portion of it is moved backwards when shooting, rather than forwards as in a conventional gun.

I use a 1.1m roller that i made up from a RA barrel and vecta 2 handle with the mannysub conversion kit.
Takes a bit of stuffing around to get it set up how you want it but ones it sorted they are bloody weapons. Im running 14mm rubber at 400% with a 6.5mm shaft. Very accurate and virtually zero recoil

I've set a 120 Rob Allen up as a roller.
Pretty dumb size really - there's not much that a standard 120 will struggle with so I'm not getting any real benefit out of it. A 140 could probably replace a woodie for a lot of big fish applications.
I'm thinking of making mine in to a 1m, which would probably be an epic snooping gun. I mainly did it because I'd heard a lot of good things from people about them and wanted to make my own opinion. Seems like all the good stuff I'd been hearing was true. Grunty as hell and no recoil.

Pics? What parts are required to modify the gun? And is it just 1 rubber?

Could be a good way to get some use out of my RA100

Cheers

What facebook pages to you like for spearfishing? I know there is nothing better than a forum for at least semi decent discussions and FB pages go off topic and have haters all the time, but are there pages you enjoy? Is there a specific page for BOP?

As a noob of 30 odd years spearfishing (like the guitar, its a hobby keep picking up and dropping) Im always confused as to how to know what suits to use in what temps.

I wondering if I can get away with a 5mm with 7mm vest in welli during winter, up to 2 hours.

yep, you can. But a shiny, new 5mm will always be better than your 30 year old 5mm. I tune my wetsuit with a 2mm surf vest. Does the trick and doesn't require more lead.

different from person to person? For me growing up in a snow cave may have something to do with it. But to be honest I wouldn't mind a 7mm on my old bones either…

I use 5mm all winter long down in Welly and could happily stay in the water all day. New suit though and maybe I don't spend as long lurking stationary at depth as some which must help.

I bought a wettie.co.nz open-cell vest that I put under my 5mm gear in winter. It works great (even for long john style). Did not cost much. Made a huge difference. I normally feel the cold and I dive in Wellington in the winter.
