Thats fair BUT endorsing gut shots and losing fish to noobs is far more irresponsible. Why even aim if it doesnt matter and they dont know the reason killing everything thats even close to legal is a stupid idea for their kids and grandkids sake? I was told its stupid so I learned to control myself and stop taking hurried shots at the end of a breath. In the west we can go buy food, no one here is starving properly so why destroy more than we need to? Unless you dont have kids - then I wouldnt expect you to understand.

That's what I always tell newbies: " if you have a doubt about the size, don't shoot it!" I once had a learning experience off Green Island, offshore from Brighton Beach, South of Dunedin: I brought in a few huge butters and the rest of the guys had small ones. I asked them why they did not go for the bigger ones, as there were a lot of big ones around. The response was: " We saw them, but we left them as they are the breeders"
Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;)

Harrison, to be fair he was talking about parore.

Parore.

I say: For every kina you berley you should be obliged to shoot at least one parore, and then gut shoot a Sandagger's wrasse.

If every parore is destined to produce a thousand more parore then it's clearly time to welcome our new parore overlords.

Must say, those red moki are looking like better targets.
They are a hell of a lot bigger, and nowhere near as fast
/whistles

I had another chat to the guys at wettie - I suspect that I haven't been fully extending my arm, and have therefore been shooting much higher than the fish, so will give that a shot tomorrow (ha!)

If I manage to put my spear through something big (kingfish), do you hold onto the gun, or do you let the gun go, and hold the float line? (while getting a breath)

Mate some people will hate on you for shooting Red moki but if you're gonna eat it then do it, better to use parore or silver drummer for target practice though :).

Best to let go of the gun and grab the floatline - that being said you will want to stop said fish from wrapping ur gear around the weed on the bottom.

I hope you are not diving alone if you are after kingies for now. I would suggest you just make sure you have a knowledgeable bloke around because you sound like you still need some experience on the kingies. Sometimes they are easy, but they can be pretty brutal if you dunno how to handle them after you put the spear through them.

Nope, not diving alone.

Been watching a lot of videos, but couldn't see what people are doing with the kings. Not all that keen to get stabbed by my own spear either

I don't want to shoot anything that I'm not going to eat.

Kingies sometimes manages to get you tied up in your line. And when you are tied up in your line, you cannot kick. And when said kingy decides to pull you under, you are ****ed. Happened to me with my first kingy and it was a bit of a scare.

With that said, everyone has to start somewhere. A good idea is to check where the current is flowing. Once you shoot said kingy, hang on to your line as Brett said and let it go just enough not for it to reach the bottom. While doing all of this, fin against the current so your line can run behind you. In short, that would be a good way to start off. Make sure your mate is close as well and make sure you have a knife. One you get used to them, you'll know what to do, but the first one can be a bit intimidating.

Yep. Was using a bent elbow.

Hit a butter, but I suspect there was a rock behind it, so it escaped, sodding annoying. Hit it pretty much in the middle of the body, 10cm from its mouth

While trying to reload (spear wasn't clicking back into the trigger) has an enormous leather jacket rock up

Then landed a 40cm parore - how do you get that black lining out? Scratch with back of knife?

If your are wearing your gloves it rubs off fairly easily. It doesn't have to be 100% off. Just the worst of it.

Has anybody had any experience being followed around by spaceship sized sting rays while spearfishing?

Been diving since Christmas, mainly around Whangaparaoa and Waiheke. I see big rays every time I'm the water, usually just resting on the bottom, but sometimes sailing past.

Was followed around for a bit by one off Oneroa. I was swimming along a reef and looked sideways and saw this huge f***ing thing gliding past and nearly jumped out of my wetsuit. It must have been nearly as big as me wingspan wise, think it was a short tailed stingray. Stopped to watch and it turned and did another pass then sort of hovered vertically under an overhang and kept watching me (I think). I didn't have any fish (I still have yet to successfully spear a fish ;_;) so I assume it was just curious... I've read stuff on here about them taking fish from people's float lines though.

Was also checked out by an eagle ray on Saturday, it kind of circled me having a look, their eyes are easier to see than the black ones so you can see them watching you.

They don't seem aggressive at all, just curious and almost friendly. I quite like bumping into them now but I still give them a bit of space as I don't want to end up like Steve Irwin. Def some of the cooler underwater creatures I've seen so far.

Ha ha ha this is choice. Put your hand out and get them to rub up against it like a pet cat. Those big ones are beautiful creatures, enjoy being with them.
