I will return to NZ after 12 years in Europe and to show my little kids what NZ is all about. We planned to rent a house near the karikari peninsula and show them the beautiful area. However I just found out that the rahui in Maitai Bay will be effective until 2025. Further a lot of tracks and roads are blocked/closed. So are there still good spots in the area we can reach for a shore dive. Unfortunately we don´t have a boat, but I promised my little kids that the will see some good fish and some crays. I would really appreciate it if you could point me in the right directions. My intention is not to shoot everything I see, but to teach my children the love for the ocean, kai moana and the importance to look after this wonderfull place.

I really hope that you guys can help me out and give me some advice. Understandably an online forum is not the right place to share your secret spots. If you would rather shoot me a message to cle@mollmd.com.

Thanks a million

As a small child I would collect Tuatuas with my family down Johnson Point Road and Uretiti. My mum is turning 90 years young and out of all the things she could ask to do to celebrate, she has asked to take her to get Tuatuas! I now live in Auckland and we will need to choose a day for low tide but I need any help as to whether they are around as I know they move. They were prevalent back in the day but that was 40-50 years ago! I know locals like to keep this info close, any feedback and help would be appreciated.

There are a few options which are described on the F&G website, but saltwater fishing is a better option.

I like to fish first and last light and will leave her to sleep in the campervan. I am looking for trout or coarse fishing between Aukland and maybe Cambridge for a few days. Then we head North for a couple of weeks. Trout fishing would be great to find in Northland but I am open to sea fishing from rocks or wharves etc. Thanks

Paihia has developed a real rough edge over the last few years. Kerikeri is just a town up a river.

Russell is the place for you.

Accommodation should start becoming available in the second half of January. AKLD Anniversary Weekend could be busy though.

Plenty of old heritage type stuff to check out, shops for, err, shopping... a few cafes etc for, err, cafe? Youve got beaches on the islands, or on the mainland in Russell and out at Oke Bay. Surf at Taupiri/Elliot if you get a big easterly blow.

Launching for your boat is at the ramp in Russell or at Tapeka. If its screaming S/westerlies those ramps will be exposed badly so, 20mins east at Te Uenga is really good if you have awd/4wd - and will launch you right into the islands and protected waters.

Drink, but dont eat at the Duke. Youre better off eating at the Swordfish Club, Hones or RSA - actually pretty much anywhere is better than the Duke. Visit Carl over the hill at Long Beach in his caravan for your morning coffee. He's there daily before sun up. Go to Paroa Bay Winery for dinner if you want something really flash for the big night.

Fishing for snapper will be fairly tough in January - perhaps visit the Screaming Reels shop in town for the latest news and to get some bait. But ive found evening fishing in 50-70m between Red Head and the Ninepin in the evenings and even after dark with fresh bait seems to be fairly reliable for snapper. Or focus on Kingies at Bird Rk and Piercy with Rapalas and livebaits during the day - unlikely to catch a monster but plagues of ~12kg fish over summer.

Boating - but not focused on fishing - is usually protected no matter what the wind. As mentioned above, Roberton Is interesting, as is Moturua Is - both good in a northerly wind. Waewaetoria good in almost any wind - great beaching and swimming etc. If it turns east - move to inside Urupukapuka Is - that also has food and drink at Ohehei Bay with some good walks with stuff to check out.

If its calm and youre feeling confident, blast out to Cape Brett and run the hole through the rock.

Fuel is at the GAS at the Old Russell Rd turn off. They now have 24hr pay at pump so you can go early or late.
