From the choices in that price range I would look at the Catalina 5000h which feels good but is quite stiff to start with. Others are the new Saragosa but the gear ratio of the $10k is a bit slow. Another option is the Penn Torque 7 which is a very solid reel, nowhere near as refined but will last and last. All have sufficient drag. The Catalina can be had in Oz for AUD $650, the Penn around the same and the Gosa for about $320.

If I was fishing the stones, it would be the Penn as it is tough, fully waterproof and replacement parts are much cheaper. If I was boat fishing probably the Catalina, which is waterproof but features a lot of "zaion" parts, which is another name for a carbon/plastic like composite.  If I went with the Gosa it would be the 8k model with the faster retrieve ratio and would upgrade to a bigger spool (i.e. the 10k) when available and therefore give you the option of running two class weights (i.e.  50lb and 80lb). Pretty good value and the reviews to date are positive on this reel.

The old Catalina I had on the boat was one of the best performing reels I ever had, it had a knack of just catching more fish than any other outfit on board.
It also caught a truckload of fish and got hammered by clients, awesome reels

I got a 5000H  Catalina from Fishhead.com .au in 4 days just before Christmas , great service , came in at just over $800. Same guts as a Saltiga I think , minus a couple of bearings , 15kg drag.
Have had saltigas , stellas and find this a hard deal to beat .
Why isn't Daiwa nz interested in these reels ? They sold the old Catalinas but not the new ones .

Thanks for the info. In terms of what - Kingfish. I do the occasional long range charter to the usual haunts but 95% of it will be from small boats in Northland, Coromandel and Auckland waters.

How much Drag?

Depends on what ya targeting and where?

Catching 25-30 kilo YTF in 20 meters of water will require much more drag than 12 -15 kilo fish in 50 meters of water.

Targeting  GT,s up against the reef requires lots a drag and luck, targeting the same class of fish at a channel marker  in open country  doesn't require the same amount...


Some reasonably priced second hand Saltiga Z and Catalinas are available on Ebay.

My next door neighbour wanted a reel for his wife, when I told him how much a Stella or Saltiga cost he stoppped looking me in the eyes and stared at the ground, I pointed him in the direction of  the new Saragosa....... He just purchased a 1000O SW , It will do everything she asks of it and last... That would be my pick at the lower end of the price range your talking about

How much drag do people actually use when stickbaiting - does anyone measure it? I'm trying to work out what reel I want without spending $1k or more. $4-800 is more like it. Is there anything better than the 2011 Catalina 6500 in this price range? Who sells them cause they don't seem to bring them into the country? Would I be undergunned with a Sustain 10000 FG. Maybe the new Saragosa would be better. It has more drag but less ballbearings than the Sustain but then it bring in more line per turn. None of this stuff is cheap so I want to make the right decision. Lots of questions.
