haha Andy, your a card mate but you need to know a little more about the facts,
your right about the Comm's they should have a reduction,
yep the inner /upper harbour is a problem this time of year,
the comms are killing millions of baby fish that get throw back now, increasing their size would only increase the dead fish count,
if that shop is buying Rec cought fish you should report him, 25cm is very small so add a measure along side and take a pic if you think they are too small,
agree Trawling should be kept for deeper water, 100mt plus,
you cant stand down huge boats and send crews packing while they wait for the season to restart,
they will still catch the same amount of fish in the end, so really makes no difference.
they have closed areas now which is working for us, but other areas outside the HG also need to be looked at, it is here they are depleting other areas stock that are already under huge pressure...

Okay my two cent contribution here - just been drawn attention to this matter.

I think -

1. Comm limits needs to be cut if our rec limit cut. Personally I am ok with less snapper as shorebased inner city busy people we never catch to the limit anyway. But I mean even out on a boat I'd be happy just taking 3 or 4 snappers that alone will feed my family for 1 to 2 weeks no problem.

2. Min size for both rec and especially the com fishing needs to be increased and ENFORCED. I have seen snapper about 23-24cm being sold at our local Chinese supermarket and no one is saying anything about that - I confronted the owner of the supermarket he said he doesn't know what that is about he said they bought the fish from a legal source (but in fact I KNOW some rec fishers sell them fish under the table, some of legal size some aren't and THAT needs to be addressed because as far as I know, selling your rec catch isn't allowed in NZ).

3. Trawling should be reduced as it pretty much kills everything.

4. A closed period for all com fishing (and maybe even rec fishing) during the spawning period should be enforced. GPS should be fitted to com boats and should they enter the closed areas they need to be penalised heavily. We have the 'closed period' in Hong Kong, it is probably the only thing that is keeping the fish alive in over there, if not their waters would have been absolutely fishless.

Do you think a or b would be influenced significantly - are there that many people who would have such a need to go west just so they could bring home a feed of 9 fish?

IMHO I'm not convinced the powers that be are addressing the route cause of the problem with their proposals....I'm guessing most purposely don't bring back their limit anyway

hope your ready to give up your rights Kiwisurhie because that is really what is behind it,
they will tell you its unsustainable what your taking from the ocean,
you are taking more than has been allocated to you,
you have to take less so the stocks will build,
ask them who pays there wages, yes its from the 66% quota holders and 33% Goverment funded,
ask them why the Comm's dont take a huge cut over the next 5 years to rebuild the stock they catch 70% of the fish.
ask them why the comm's can throw back millions of undersize fish without worring about the future stocks....

if you come outa this with the idea they are doing the right thing for this country as a whole i will eat my hat.... in fact if you do come out thinking they are right dont even reply because you would have to be either one of them or your a right idiot...

A)start fishing west coast where limit is 10

B)take unsuitable vessels out west,

Sorry us concerned fishers who do care for the fisheries have been shafted 3 times by this lot in the past..no 4th time coming up..action will be action.MPI papers are all B/S and do not need discussing ..You can ask them what you like .... but by hook or by crook we are going to have a major hearing here

Let the mpi guys do their jobs for the people that are interested like me. It's a bit stupid to go out of your way to disrupt others chance if you've already been. From what i understand they dont talk just answer questions and explain the informafion.

yep go for it Guys/Girls,
the MPI folk will stand around and only talk to those that look to scared to appose them,
they dont want confrontation because they know we will get outa hand...

here are some facts to fire at them,

we didnt take this fishery down to 20% the previous Gov's let it happen,
we tried once before to lift the percentage by reducing our take from 15 to 10 voluntarily and what did you do with it? gave it to the Quota holders to take,
you think we trust you now? well guess what your full of it,
we are not giving anything up till they address the wastage, and prove it is working.
the quota holders need to reduce their take to help rebuild this fishery,

give em heaps, if they think we are going to just roll over and die think again...
