Definitely back to the wharf for more practice then as I reckon I was only getting about 25m at best.  The Finnor rod is very stiff, would a softer rod help with casting as I also have an ugly stik black tiger, which is a similar length but softer action.  I'll give that one a try next time.  I need to experiment with drop back as I wasn't using much at all, I think I was worried about getting it all tangled up.

Kevin,
You are on the right track just practising - alot dont.Further cast = more swim time.
I would say if you keep doing so you will outcast a average caster with the best gear.
 
7ft is on the shorter side of things,but my favourite rod is 7'6 and I cast not too bad with that.
 
Experiment with casting off the braid vs. off the leader and length of dropback (for me about 1.5m from lure to rod tip) and lure weights.
Also practice casting off both shoulders,that comes in handy and can lead to more fishing time when you choose one side of the boat people cant cast off Evil SmileWink
 
I have no idea how far I can cast but I know I can cast all day and be accurate.
 
One of my most satisfying momments was with Kurt from Poppin Tonga,it had been a very hard day..we had changed baits alot and spots..Kurt said what have you got in that lure bag that is smaller/different..I put on a smaller lure (100g Orion Bigfoot)..he said fire it up into that break in the reef 50m away (not a huge gap) ,it landed in the middle and was eaten by a nice medium sized GT..then I had to wrestle it out of very shallow water. 
 
The important thing I was able to put it where I needed to in order to get a bite.

I went to the local wharf yesterday evening to have a go at throwing some lures around.  Wasn't expecting to catch anything, just wanted to have a practice and see how it all worked.  Although the distance I cast was improving over the hour or so I was there (it couldn't have got any worse from when I started!) I don't think it was that good.  With a finnor FNS7050 7' rod, OF8500 reel and a 160mm starwalker lure what sort of distance do you think I should be aiming for?

On the plus side, my newly acquired ability to tie FG knots seems to work as I didn't lose anything.
