We call them Garfish over here but same thing, best one I ever saw was about 350g (12oz)
Gut them and take their heads off, lay them back down then get a rolling pinand roll them flat, peel out the backbone, dust them in flour and shallow fry them, yum!

Yea i remember those maggots in the tins years ago. The was this one dude used to come down the whalf every time and put them on his flies and clean up. I never used them but they allways caught piper.
 
Do people still use them?. Where do you get maggots from?. I never knew. This was like 20 years ago.
 
 Im too clean to breed my own. lol.
 
I wouldnt wind getting into the maggots to catch my live baits. Especially piper.

Not on a fly mate, I haven't tried for them with flies. They follow my snapper flies with great enthusiasm though.

I'd say a willow grub pattern would be excellent. Anything you can strip in to get their attention that is small enough for them to chew would probably do the trick.

Saw some piper on the coro east coast once easily a foot at least the lot were a big school it was too.

I have always used a trout hook with 6lb fluro line with a split shot up the top with some fresh squid small bait to suit the hook, and no float cast out wind the line back in slow and they grab it.

going to use some bigger ones for stray lining this season..

big buggers around the back of Gt Barrier in close at night... these are the Ocean going one, CJ broke my bait rod try to land them, they can be so thick you just scoop them out with a net or jag them with sabikis...
at a guess they would be 15/18cm long....
bloody hard to keep alive till the morning though..

Have caught loads over the years..many from Murrays Bay Wharf...back in those days used to be a couple of old pensioners down there every calm morning with there Tabacco tins filled with bran and wriggling maggots.
They used to do really well with that method..i used to use Pipis dug up from Mairangi Bay beach..god times have changedStern Smile

This one was a biggie that my son got a few years back...wish we had of measured it as it was long and fat.
