It's tempting to get that bit of extra line onto your spool but really you want to under fill your spool. Since using those angled casting guides thou, I've managed to pretty much eliminate them. I can just heave out the casts now with the confidence my beloved lure and me are not going to part ways.
Here's a sweet vid that demonstrates how wind knots are formed and how the angled guides help out a lot. Just go straight to 5:04 for the double foot guides.

Author: Titahi
Subject: 82572
Posted: 18 Sep 2012 at 9:53am

wind knots typically occur when the braid leaving the spool is travelling faster than the braid exiting the tip. The oscillating/spiral effect of the braid coming off the spool lip causes the braid to throw loops, which travel down the rod ( through the guides) and because the line leaving the tip is travelling slower it causes the loops to bunch up behind it and the line wraps around a foot or the blank.
I have been using some IGFA rated finns braid lately on a lite spinning setup. when the wind on leader is at the tip and I cast I have no problems, after getting busted off by a larger model fish than typically found here, I attached a new wind on leader, which I inadvertently left longer than usual. Although it didnt seem to make much difference I was plauged by wind knots, untill I shortened the leader, so that the join was no more than 3 guides from the tip...... Problem solved.

So even though I couldnt discern any difference, the cats paw join was slowing up the line exiting the rod tip and the line leaving the spool was bunching up behind it, causing me to get pissed....

To much line on the spool will have a similar effect where the line comes off the spool lip faster than it can exit the rod tip, causing the oscillating loops traveling down through the guides to bunch, as will casting into the wind.

I am not a fan of any of the fused braids for casting, rather i like something supple, reality is though that all of em can cause wind knots or dont depending on how its set up. Its not so much the line, rather its the mechanics of the line, spool lip and guides used

Bigger diameter guides allow bigger loops to pass through em with less likely hood of the dreaded...CRACK..........noooooooooo not my Gamma! especially with croc and shark infested waters

I use the 60lb which is 90lb ABS. Struct - just use the FG knot with it. Dunno about using heavy fused braid as recommended above.

Lots you can do to reduce wind knots if you search through here, although you're probably better using google and adding fishing.net rather than this site's search function ~ it's pretty crap.
