I have to admit I am not 100% up with netting regulations but I'm pretty the minimum mesh size is 92mm for grey mullet

It's a chicken and egg situation with the mesh size, why set a mesh size if your not going to set a size limit. As Lethal suggest its easily fixed if the set a minimum size based on the size of mullet that is entrapted by 85mm mesh.

@Milan sorry for dropping you in it, but with being on TV the info needs to be correct, and glad to see your working with MPI to portray the correct rules in a future episode.

Here is the response from MIP (formally mfish)

Thank you for contacting the Ministry for Primary Industries.

The information you state that you received about drag-netting is accurate.

To reiterate:

- Grey Mullet has no size limit
- Drag-net minimum mesh size for Grey Mullet is 85mm (Auckland Kermadec Fishery Area)
- Grey Mullet caught with a net of smaller mesh than 85mm must be returned to the sea immediately and not taken as part of catch

I have been in contact with the producers of the show, Big, Angry Fish and they state they are aware of the concerns raised and are taking steps to promote fishing regulations in an upcoming series of the show. This will be aided by the ministry.

be better if they changed the rules on grey mullet and put a size limit as it should be instead of trying to confuse the situation, then we would all understand it....

Just seen this post, to be honest we have tried very hard to make sure we have got everything right, as we are in the public arena and need to be promoting a very positive message.
We made a mistake, we were well away of the set net limits and that there was no size limit for Grey Mullet. But were unaware of the drag net rules. Being that we are on TV giving advise to the fishing public and have contact Ministry of Fish to make sure they are awear of the mistake and happy with our ideas on getting correct information out to the public

We will have a show correcting the information we have portrayed to the public and making them fully aware of the rules of drag netting for bait, we feel this would be the best way to make sure we get the correct information to the broadest amount of people
We apologise for the mistake and hope our actions to right the wrongs will rectify the situation.

In the FAQ section they talk about cast nets. It reads likeyou would need to have the correct mesh size for the target species so 85mm forGrey Mullet. IMHO its retarded to have a minimum mesh size without setting asize limit. Good luck getting close enough to a mullet large enough to becaptured in an 85mm cast net that would be an impressive effort if achived.

Can I use a casting net inNew Zealand?

There are no specific restrictions against using casting nets in New Zealand, however theremay be closed areas (rähui), marine reserves or mätaitai to consider whensetting your net.

The size of the mesh depends on your targeted species. For bait fish such asherrings, pilchards and pipers etc the mesh size is 25mm.

My mistake it was Paerengarenga they were fishing. I watched a whole bunch on the weekend and they all blended into one.

The bait net.

The grey mullet, notice the distinctive eyelid and broader profile, they are stockier all round than yellow eyes.

The mesh

The live bait, too small for 85mm mesh...

The problem is with not setting a minimum size but stating a minimum drag net mesh size.

They need to make up their minds and either set a minimum size or scrap the minimum dragnet mesh size.

I agree with delgo and stick with the 30 per person per day as the limiting factor.

As far as never catching one in a bait net, Greys are fast. if your too slow with your net the greys will all swim out before you can close them out. I've lost count as a kid of how many swam past me on the end of the net escaping to freedom. or jumping over the net was another favourite way for them to escape capture.

My post was concerning a cast net, and yes I do know the difference between yellow-eye and grey mullet. The area where I cast for bait (on the Kaipara) has big schools of both fish. The grey mullet range in size from juveniles of similar size to yellow-eye mullet, up to 25-30 cm with the odd one bigger still. As the regulations stand at present I am required to pick out any juvenile mullet and release them although there is no limit on the piper or yellow-eye mullet.

Actually the regulations could I suppose be read to say I cannot use any kind of bait net at all because there are grey mullet in the area?

It seems to me to be a contradiction to have a minimum mesh size on a fish that does not itself have a minimum size. Sure snapper and flounder need to have a minimum mesh size to avoid undersize fish being caught and killed, but grey mullet do not have a minimum size limit. Surely the catch limit (30 per day in my area) is sufficient.
