Depends on what you want the lights for.
Low powered cheapies, or a bit of rope light might get a few uses and brung a few bait fish around. I would however recommend putting a fuse on the rope light before you throw it in the water.... The stuff is not really designed for that and will fail when submersed in water.
If you are looking at lighting up lures towed out the back of the boat day or night then you need to smash a serious amount of light at it. There is some of the cost in the quality of the led components. Add to that, a poorly designed/manufactured Chinese light that you have drilled through the hull of your boat ........ If that fails and leaks, what happens to your expensive boat when the water floods in while sitting on it's berth ? If you need to fix/replace a cheapy light - what does it cost to pull the boat out of the water ? Will the light supplier pay for this ?

I have seen a couple of marine electrics guys who chomp through a lot of our surface mount pool lights for use under boats. They ar a bit bigger than some of the marine lights, but a lt brighter, made in Australia for the purpose of underwater lighting, and similar cost if not better priced than most of the chez Iesha.

Really comes down to what you want the lights to do for you. A bit of effect and maybe pull some bait fish to the boat, or big output marlin pulling lights ?

The blue or green both work well due to the wavelength of the light and how it travels through the water, have heard mixed arguments on which is the best colour for pulling baits, I run blue and haven't had the need to test green yet, we have had to buy a fine net for scooping up the piper though.

ive got  hella led truck tail lights under water in my swimming pool,  12 months and they still work mint

Technichal equipment sells underwater LED Rope light. Have it as long as you want where you want,  no need to penetrate the hull below the waterline, you could even troll a ten metre length behind the boat. Not as powerfull in one direction But bright as all hell . Depends what you want to do. Dont belive in them my self,  try telling the americans that though. Whats the idea with them for catching bait or looking pretty at the wharf ? also got a big bugger for $75 lights up and area about 50feet around the boat at night.

They aren't cheap, are they....  the Hella ones look the business... solid bronze trough hull fittings with heavy duty lenses...  but at $3-500 a pop its a bit steep.  Does anyone know of any less financially draining options?  might have to make up some home made versions...
