I'm sure I could get a production run of man sized alloy handle frames, and wooden sidestocks made up to fit these guns. Just need someone to get me one of the original Riffe Euro handles to get the basic dimensions. To be honest, with winter on the doorstep i'd do a one off just so I have a spearfishing project to work on.
 
Similar to this one I knocked up for a midhandle gun i'm making at the moment.

Not really.  Spearguns have an optimal set-up of rubber strength and shaft weight.  If you mess around with it you'll compromise accuracy.

I think it was more the opposite - longer arms = longer range.

Well I don't really want to use a 1400 in NZ Gareth but I made myself practice with it so that I didn't look like a complete clusterf**k on the trip to the tropics.
 
MJL very good point - a shorter person might find a 1400 harder to load/wield but for the likes of LJ and Dave its probably just a hand pistol!
