Author: travel1062
Subject: 55618
Posted: 30 Jul 2010 at 8:11am

Giving the growing trend for twisted leaders, wind-ons and incredibly complicated and bulky terminals for GT popping, it almost seems old fashioned now, but the FG is a superb knot and fairly easy to tie when you get the hang of it - critical is retaining tension when weaving. After lots of practice I can even tie this not on a very bumpy boat and in near darkness. I use the original Japanese way of tying this knot and have avoided the various "improved FG knot" techniques (just check YouTube to find "improved" variants, and you will; find slightly pompous and mostly American guys telling you how they have improved this knot ).

I pop for GT using PE8-10 with a fairly simple set up: braid - FG knot to shock leader 100lb-150 lb depending - leader to bb swivel with a uni knot - swivel to 400lb minimum split ring - split ring to popper. Poppers always rigged with single hooks (curse those bloody trebles).

The Aussie GT enthusiasts especially would say that is too light and simple for monster GTs... I ain't so sure about that, and as with a jigging terminal set up, I like to keep it simple. But hey, I dont pop monster black GTs in New Caledonia (yet).
