LOL I intend to only use it for flares. If I shoot a seagul it will be accidental - would rather drown then face a long trip home on a Greenpeace boat.

The Police had an issue with them years ago, because there were quite a few old style flare guns around that were constructed out of steel or brass/bronze it was a simple matter of getting a sleeve machined up out of steel to slide into the existing barrel and you had a .410 or 12 gauge single shot pistol similar to the Kea guns that were given to farmers.
You would be pretty foolish to try and convert a plastic one like the one in the first post without losing a hand or finger.

Load it with some shotgun shells (lead shot preferably). When in trouble, shoot the nearest seagull. You will have Greenpeace, Sea Sheperd, Forest & Bird, the SPCA, plus the Green Party all over you long before the coastguard could ever get there LOL

Hand flares have better burn times, better range and are a little more controllable due to the size.  The parachutes in those flare shells do not burn very long at all - they were originally intended as a signalling device over a distress signal.
 
Plus, I wouldn't trust that piece of plastic any day!

Mike Cahill the Hamilton firearms officer, just quoted me over the ph from the Arms act 1983 section 49 that  Flare guns/pistols may be posessed and used FOR A LAWFUL AND PROPER PURPOSE,And that when not in use must be in a secure LOCKED container at all times.He said if a kid gets hold of it it can kill easily.
(which is certainly a lot different from what i got told by the Raglan harbourmaster, when i wanted to buy one myself.)
You would be able to buy the flares through a marine chandlery,but they are like hens teeth i think and as expensive.
 
But bear in mind that they only burn for 7 seconds, and thats not a lot of time for someone to see in bright daylight.
