An old stainless sink with a grill or mesh to sit fish on. Few planks over top or make a tin lid , wood chips on bottom of sink then just sit over gas burner.

Works quite well for a quick smoke.

Cheapest smoker.

Requires a BBQ an old roasting Dish, a wire cake rack, an oven tray and a Brick.

Place Roasting Dish on BBQ hot plate, sprinkle in sawdust, place wire cake rack in dish, place fish on rack. Put oven tray on top and brick on that. 15 minutes later all done.

If you've got the BBQ and the brick, it should cost you no more than $20 total at the Warehouse for the Dish, the rack and the tray. (and you can get them all in stainless steel so easy to clean, no rust etc)

For the price of two packs of Holiday 25s, you can smoke quite a few kahawai - no jokes  !

If you want something more unconventional that allows you to do both hot and cold smoking, I find a cheap kettle barbecue on wheels likes the ones the Warewhare has works well. For 'cold' smoking, put a burner in the ash tray under the kettle. For hot, put fire in the kettle. It also holds more than the rectangular smokers and you can regulate the heat thru the top vent.

You can also pick them up very cheaply at the second-hand shops (I paid $25 for mine - it is not a Weber but it does the trick!).
