standard wet an dry paper ,,i washed my boat today minted it up but forgot to take a real close pic of the pontoons but will do it for you
dont worry Aidan you wont fook it up experiment on a piece of alloy got a pull out transom door ,if so play around on that so you can get it right thats what i did,,,,whats the boat mate

one last thing when u say 1100/1200/1500 paper u mean just standard sand paper aye?

there isnt any special sand paper for ali i need to get?

aidan mate ill just keep feeding you the info is what this place is for ,check out particularly surtees and mcaly now those two brands are acid washed and nyalic ,clearcoat being the same ,note the colour un buffed they dont put a shine on there boats ,i went paraell with the alloy length wise by hand and water and got a good effect ,the tosser at nyalic said use 80 grit like christ it will scratch **** out of it some salesman anyway hand rubbed with scotch pad seemend fine if use a buff with scothpad you will get swirls which i didnt like after scotchpad you can always use 1100/12000/1500 paper go over it and it will remove the pad marks the scotch pad will remove the dull acid wash colour bringing to a shine ,once you have even colour after pad clean and spray on the clear and it will stay like that ,dont buy the clear already in spray cans get the stuff in a tin its thicker and a better product ,when dry put your hand over it and you will feel the protective coat its great and one even coat is enough although i did a couple ,,,ill stand by mate]]> Tue, 28 Apr 2009 19:11:16 +0000 https://www.fishing.net.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40308&PID=570548&title=ali-bright#570548 <![CDATA[ALI BRIGHT : yeh i am abit un sure mate hence...]]> https://www.fishing.net.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40308&PID=570367&title=ali-bright#570367 Author: aidan

yeh i am abit un sure mate hence me pestering you with all these questions.lol

i wanna do an acid wash and then put the clear over it so id probably need to rough up the surface abit aye? would an electric buffer with a scothe pad be suitable to rough up the surface a wee bit? then just clear coat over it?

thanks again for all your help im almost at the point where im going to go and buy all the gear just wanted a few pro's opinions first to be sure im not gonna wreck my boat

you can buy the clear from a paint shop that sells automotive paints ,,,you can only spray it on
i used 2k paint which is a paint and you add hardner and thinners ,,,,you got any contacts in the panel/paint bussiness if so they would know exactly ,,,you sound a little unsure aidan are you going to acid wash and paint or acid wash and clear cause if you are doing the latter you would have to lightly scotch pad the surface so clear will stick

its easy to repair tobe the beauty of paint with clear as if you did scratch it sand it out and respray then flick some clear on it ,when i got mine i scratched it on a jetty the scratch then becomes blackish as the salt water hits the bare alloy they say simply reapply some nyalic will this pigs bollox because A the colour doesnt match and B you can see the repair,,believe me ive had some experience with that stuff

locall boat yard here sells osprey boats which are made in nelson and he was telling me that they no longer come nyalic just bare alloy and when one sells they acid wash it ,i think mclay are stopping using dupont as that to is a major to repair ,,paint bro cant go wrong and it keeps the new look ,when mine went in for service they actually didnt know if it was dupont or nyalic and when i said i sprayed it they were shocked couldnt believe the result,,its always going to be a ongoing problem alloy and salt water there are some gimmicks out there to be the saviour ,nyalic is an excellent etch primer ,nyalic is applied in my veiw for showroom sales ,why put nyalic on paint see the dvd when for years painters in the auto shop have been usuing automotive clear which is a thicker product which is more durable,,its a shame Aiden you live up there as you cant view my boat ,but what i will do is take a close up pic of a pontoon and let you see the result with paint

oh k.so they automotive clear coat doesnt flake off like the other fella said earlier in the thread?

like does it stick well to aluminum? i just want to do it once and do it right if ya know what i mean.
