This clashes with Secondary Schools Underwater Hockey Nationals however I think we will get 2, maybe 3, teams from Fins underwater hockey.

Hi all,

Well what a decision to have to make. I have only been involved in the event for 4-years and found it a very gutting decision to make. I know everyone who has been in the organising team and all the teams and sponsors that were lined up to take part in this years event are really irritated that we have had to postpone this years event.

The decision to pull the plug was made late last night in view of this recommendation:

SEVERE STORM HEADING TOWARDS THE NORTH ISLANDMetService is concerned about the potential wind, wave and rain impacts from a rapidly intensifying subtropical depression heading quickly towards New Zealand. This depression, currently off the Queenslandcoast, should follow a path close to Northland and Auckland on Saturday and Bay of Plenty and Gisborne on Sunday. It has the capacity to bring hazardous weather to many parts of the North Island."By the time this system reaches northern New Zealand on Saturday, it is likely to have significant destructive potential", commented Peter Kreft of MetService. "Damaging gales and/or very heavy downpours are possible in many North Island areas. At this early stage, it is too close to call which places will catch the worst of the storm."Besides the threat to land areas, many parts of the North Island coast and surrounding seas are likely to be dangerous places at some point in the coming weekend. Very strong winds are likely to generate treacherous sea conditions.Mr Kreft added "Given the potentially serious nature of this weather event, people are encouraged to keep abreast of the latest weather information on www.metservice.com". The decision was made with safety in mind but also the event would have lost some of its competition as we would not have been able to get any boats out of the inner bay and I do not know how many snapper would have been available off the beach!

We have reviewed the tide charts and have confirmed with the RSA in Paihia that the 6th of September is the next best date. (The venue is not available on the 20th) An added advantage of a latter event is 2 fold. The water will be warmer and the scallop season is open!

Everything else stays the same. Can you advise me by return if you and your teams can make this new date. Please include

From a quick straw poll of some of those who were going from Fins UWH - we might be lucky to get one team together!

Something to work on for the next few weeks - trying to get more people along to make a competition.

Yep, Paul is right on the positives and negatives.

As it is the same weekend as Underwater Hockey Nationals (Christchurch) the participation from UWH will drop off a lot - e.g. Fins were sending 4 teams up for R2P but we may only get 1 going on the new date.

We were sending a competitive team and 3 social teams but the new date will decimate the competitive team - thems the breaks I guess

On the positive side, scallop season is open.
Negative side, same weekend as UWH nationals.
