Ive tried around huntly, but vis is a crapy 1m at best, and you basically just dry shoot them from the surface.
 
A group of us ventured down not long ago to have a look at the river in the centre of Hamilton.  Quite a few koi around but vis was about 2-3m from what I remember and none of us were that keen as the size of them were around 2-3kg.  No secret spots, just the further you go south the cleaner the water gets. 
 
You dont need a boat, but a kayak would be a very good idea!

We done it land based. Its freaking awsome, get pist up first though.
