Going to mount (on a small Mac plastic boat not a kayak) a triple Scotty holder and two singles. Rod use - trolling, bottom fishing, suspended slow jig, rod storage while underway or unhooking, etc)

 

There are a number of options for the Scotyy brand rod-holders themselves - I see the Rodmaster 250 version recommended in this thread with a gimbal pin (I assume gimbal pin is to lock rod and also, as it can be removed, to allow the rod to slide deeper in the holder?

 

Wondering if any one has used any of the 10 or so other Scotty rod holders (Orca, RodmasterII, Powerlock, Striker, etc) - ease of use, prefernce, reasons why etc etc

 

Any thoughts appreciated

 

do you have to wear goggles to stop your eyelids peeling back as well. just the other week when they had the offshore power boat races in the harbour i went for a look and actually won a race. had to decline the trophy as they didnt realy stand a chance. some of the boats only had 5 or 6 hundred horsepower

 

on a more serious note

 

found a scotty and had a good look both the flush mount and deck mount. and they have a bung for the flush mount the cheaper versions dont seem to have the bung.

 

Rainbow i have an older prowler and it hasnt got the nut inserts for the scotty just a blank flat piece so no major revision of that space needed

 

Bush i was looking at that one and i wouldnt get one without the gimble pin

Kiwifred - everything on the Profish needs to be flush mounted or it gets torn off with wind at the speed we paddle

I have been using the Scotty's on my kayaks for over 5 years and have had no issues with breakage in the surf - unlike the many torn out and leaky flush mounts I've seen.

Make sure you get the Rodmaster 250 version as it has a gimbal pin.

The problem with the Prowlers is that the forward centre mounting recess has the nut inserts spaced for a Scotty.    Since I wanted a flush rod holder for trolling and to store the rod when taking off a fish I had to call on the plastic welders to add a piece of poly to the foot and  close the existing screw holes.    After that I drilled new holes to match the top nut inserts.    I used Nylex nuts for the other two.    

 

One more thing if you go down this track get a right angle holder not the slanted one.    I initially used the slanted one on the slanted deck of my old P13 and had the rod coming out vertically.    Looked great that is until I hooked a KY, which jammed the rod so hard that I couldn't get it out.     The right angle one fixed that problem because the rod always slants back.

been looking at a rod holder for the yak and see that there is a big difference in price and style.

 

my problem is that the ones i have been looking at have a flush mount option which i want for the centre point on my prowler. this recesses down into the yak and effectivley provides a nice hole for water to enter the yak (while this is ok for the F n D and Profish as they require ballast anyway my classy Prowler is a different story)

 

not having seen a scotty version i take it this is not the case with this brand?? or if it is what does everyone do about it
