This has put me in mind
of a story as told to me, by a resident amatuer fisho whilst in

Cairns.

Apparently there is a vatiety of smallish mullet there, called

"bug eyed mullet" due to their rather bulging eyes.

Anyway they tend to inhabit the rather murky estuarine upper

reaches & are a top rated bait, particularly if freshly caught.

The favoured method of catching them is to use a throw net

whilst standing on the bank, into any clear areas between the

mangroves.

This guy along with his buddy set out in the early hours with

their throw net & a largish bucket, intent on gathering bait for

a fishing excursion that day.

After repeated casts they had taken an average number on

most casts & had more than enough swimming in the bucket

for their fishing trip. They were making their way back to their

vehicle, when they noticed a "meatball" of b/e mullet, boiling on

the surface in a particular spot, that offered a clear shot with

the net. Despite the fact they already had quite enough they

could not resist such a rare opportunity to catch a record number

with one final throw.

So the net was duly cast & proved to be a perfect throw, encircling

the tightly accumulated mullet. Shortly after the net landed a

volcanic like erruption exploded, as the reason for the packed activity

became apparent ......................................... Yes a small to medium

sized crocodile was lurking under the terrified mullet & consequently

they had formed a "meat ball" in the hope of being afforded a degree

of protection.

The mullet were joined in the net by the croc, that quickly became

entangled from rolling & threshing about. One of them still had the

net cord attached to his wrist & was in real danger of being dragged

into the furore as well, but fortunately managed to release it after

some very anxious moments.

In all the the commotion that had ensured, the bucket of bait fell into

water meaning they had lost the net, bucket, bait & almost the

content of their bowels.

They decided to call off the planned fishing excursion, which only goes

to show how easily Aussies are put off or discouraged, altho to be fair

I guess most of us may have done likewise.

P.S. If anyone would like to read an article (ahem, written by a notable

author/writer) re flyfishing among the crocs, I will post a link in a

following post.

Cheers
