Of course i am prepared to have blank days, when i started to fish for seatrouts in the sea i had 22 blank days in a row before i caught my first fish.  I normally dont fish waters with loads of small fish i"ll seek out the trophy section in no time, thats here in sweden.

Thats the reason why i have hired guides in NZ to learn the code down under.

That is something I ask people who specifically wish to target trophy trout. The rivers they inhabit often require long walks for a low population of large fish. They are the kings of their pools, and rarely tolerate comprtition for food. There are MANY places you can go to hit a few 7 - 9lb fish, but to specifically target 10lb plus, sight fishing with the dry, its a whole new ball game.

 

Trophy fish demand only the most stable of pools. These are their homes, and so they want sections of river where they are afforded cover and a reliable supply of food (hence the need for stable stream bed) in all conditions. They may move around a lot in these select sections, but learning to identify potential trophy water, and passing by the rest is the number one requirement of a successful trophy hunter.

 

One river I fish holds a low population of heavy browns. Some days you can walk for miles and not see a fish. Some days you can walk for miles and find several. When you find them out it can be very enjoyable!

 

Its the way these rivers work, and as long as you can handle and accept blank days, then you can turn these days into a learning experience.

 

One thing you can do right now is to ensure your casting and presentation is on the mark. You will often only get one shot at these fish. If you're too slow getting your fly off the keeper and onto the water, if your falsecasting spooks them, if your line lands heavily, if your well tied, super dupa fly drags unnaturally or if you are not used to casting whilst kneeling, or sometimes lying prone in the scrub, then you will not catch this hard stalked fish.

 

Practise, practise, practise mate. Its one thing you can do to put the odds in your favour!

 

Remember, finding these fish is only 10% of the battle!

I have hired Peter Fordham for backcountry fishing on the north island, Nikolj Mathesien for the saltwater fishing for Mako/kings/Trevally and on the south Island i have hired Robbie Mcphee from Tropy water movie.

This is to maximize my efforts and learn how to fish NZ waters in 8-10 days and then fish on my own.

I sell some flies here in sweden and have some own designes

that work excellent here in the mountain springcreeks and big

rifle stream but i mainly use the czech nympg teqnic here and seldom

dryflies since the large fish in out streams are mainly caught on

rather big nymphs, ants, wasps, caddis immiations all tied with

plenty of tungsten to get them down quik.

My goal with  going to NZ is to catch a trophy trout on a dryfly

or a emerger pattern and thats not my speciallity in flytying

U and Chris have assured me that my patterns will work down there and

for that i thank u guys from the bottom of my heart since i think that

a fish caught on my own design of fly is the best experiance a

flyfisher/tier can get.
