I did a class on Maori ao. The guy was from up north & now based in Awhitu but he knows lots about local maori history and is a really good fulla. Let me know if you want contact details Martyn.

I had a search on old newspaper archives but the NZ Herald one didn't go beyond 1945. Was a great book for sure and I have read it. My dad recalls visits to Whatipu in that same era (he was born in 1935) when there were large lagoons that they netted flounder from. It would have been a rugged drive out there in those days, with old cars and crappy gravel roads.
