C section is definitely the way to go, not many seem to use it, I guess engineering wise they have to account for some twist and a little more work to fitup for welding. But totally worth it

This is the way I'll hopefully go.

I'd give trailer services a look. They use C section steel which is superior to box section imo. No chance for salt to build up inside and do its thing. 

My boat trailer is C section steel and was made in 1980. It's still good, though I completely stripped it, and had it sandblasted and regalvanised about 3 years ago. I use a handheld spray unit to wash it immediately after each and every dunk.

I am in christhurch and would like to replace my rusty boat trailer. Rather than sink good money into patching it up I want to get a new one. The 2 names that come up after searching are mudgeway and Trailer services ltd. Ill talk to these guys, but does anyone know of other south island suppliers / fabricators? If I had more spare time I'd almost consider buying something prebuilt in Auckland and pick it up myself.
