Go as big as you can safely get away with. At a guess I’d say that’s some where around 90 - 115hp.
Try giving FiGlass in chch a call, you’d be surprised at what info they still hold.

Have recently gone through a similar exercise with a 1970’s Hartley. 18ft with a 50 red band mercury. Ended up putting 110 on it, plans said it could take 200hp… wisdom prevailed.

We ended up putting a parson on it for price mainly as it’s a summer boat that some of the older family use a Christmas. It's very tidy for its age and the transom is very good with do problems at all.

If the extra weight on the transom is acceptable, and the transom itself is still sound, then the boat will only go as fast as you make it go. Go for it. 

Do check that the wood in the transom is still sound before you install it.

Hey, been looking on here a lot for info and it's been great.

But now my motors needing replacement or a rebuild and wondering what to do.

Its a 1970s figlass cavalier maybe around 14.5ft with a 1975 Johnson 70hp. But the centre cylinder is buggered. I don't think it's worth rebuilding really.

So my question is what size engine should I be looking for to replace it? I can't find any information on the fi glass cavalier or what it's rated too. The old 70hp pushed it well.

Don't have heaps to spend so looking at a cheapish second hand replacement. it seem there's not really many options in the 70hp range but a lot of 90hp out there. Would that be way to much?

Any help appreciated
