Doug - not sure why. But to have a cushion seems familiar.

FWIW I have spooled about 10m of mono under the braid - as I always did. Never had any issues - but from time to time I query why I do things a certain way. FWIW I always spool it on under tension - prob about half the fighting tension. PITA and my arms are stuffed after. But a oncer basically.And when the marlin/YF is running you down on the spool you get a certain comfort knowing you have done the best you can and it should not fail as long as you don't run out of line. As you count the colours off.

I don't add anything under the braid either. Good knots and tight lines.

Alan you were probably advised to put mono under because braid was/is expensive and to spool a reel completely without "backing" wasn't necessary also many moons ago most were just 300 yard spools.

Same here, only got 2 mono reels in the whole fleet, everything else is straight braid to the spool arbor, only had braid slip once and that was due to spooling it way too loose.

Couple of reels running silly amounts of drag too. When 1st started with braid, I did everything wrong..
No backing, tension too loose.
Many thanks to so much learnt from Phil Baker (who is unfortunately locked down in Britain)

I orginally used a few layers of mono...
Then found out crushing was not an issue on my spools, so went to insulation tape.. not the cheap stuff, expensive 3M.
If that made a difference???
Anyway even then found a tiny little corrosion...
Now use 3 layer of 3M tape, cant rem what called, but stretches way beyond 2x, and sort of 'welds' back onto its self. Its used where cabling in extreme conditions and long term (decades) is required eg communication towers at high altitudes that go from very high summer temps to well below freezing.

Maybe over kill, but thats what have on the shelf, got used, and fully seals, no adhesives to fail, no moisture.

Had a tiny leak on the bighorn power steering a while back..
Wrapped that around real tight, 4 layers..held up till got to replacing the hose...same for old cracked vaccuum hoses leaking, till get replaced.
I think both would have lasted months or yrs beyond when the hoses actually got replaced.

Also really good for wiring looms, automotive and marine.

Alan,

I follow this formula.
Old ceramic spools, mono only, or large mono backing, firmly packed. Crushing and shattering of spool on a large fish was a common occurrence.

Chrome spools, mono backing as above.
Braid crushes chrome plating, so mono is a cushion.

Modern spools are well made alloy generally, no crushing or direct abrasion issues.

Spools that have a knob point braid can be tied directly to spool no slippage.

Spools without a knob point require mono to gain grip, including the right knot, and spooling techniques.

With all spools, all spools require the regular removal of line to clean and maintain.

I recommend on all respooling that the spool is greased for annual corrosion prevention.

There's probably more I could pas on but that's the basics for use, longevity of tools and assuring your kit will stand up.

looks like tape or mono.

I guess you guys would know better - but I wonder about corrosion under the tape. I guess not. But I may as well stick to mono - usually 5-10m.

Just one more FG knot.
