I went to Yeehaa in the weekend. What an awesome shop. I stood the Carpenter next to the Shimano Plugger and decided that I will go with the JDM Shimano and Stella 14000. One of the things I like to consider when buying gear is picture the biggest model of your target, in my case mostly Kings & then imagine it tearing off with your expensive lure.
Knowing I've got the best gear I can afford gives me a sense of confidence.
There have been many valid points raised in this thread with lots of good rod suggestions.
For me the confidence comes from using a product that has been hand made here in NZ by expert rod building artisans who I can contact & talk to if I have any questions.
Just as an aside I also really like to support local where I can.

I had a jm ocean devil stickbait, but didn't really like it. Bent yamaga, ripple fisher, ocea plugger, Smith and a few others. The synit just felt better straight away to me so got one custom built to match my saltiga 5000h

Yeah mate, as i said that is definately up there, like bucket list - marlin on topwater and doing it on that gear is real fishing in my book.
Very different fight as you said though, 40-50kg GT, kingfish could be a sub 5-10min fight on topwater sometimes, but is make or break in the first part of the fight, generally alot more drag being used so rod selection should match that.
Even kings vs GT's is still a little different, i personally think in most cases you can get away with a more forgiving (on the angler) rod, less backbone / lifting power needed with kings and marlin.
(obviously a 40kg king of the rocks is the exception to this)

I totally agree fishy 11, although it was 1hr 20 fight on the marlin it was more or less just tug of war and there is no pressure of turning the head before it heads for the reef like a donkey would. By the way DenimViper i'm not knocking your catch, read your report, hella impressive on pretty light gear by alot of peoples standards (the 80lb leader and 10,000 size reel is what stuck out to me)

Marknado4000, Yeah always a toss up, whether you pull the trigger and say i want the best, stuff the money.
Or whether you say i want to spend X amount and achieve X results, then you try find the best for that amount of money.

Just a thought here guys, awesome to see Marlin on topwater,one thing i find quite intersting and ill probably going to cop flack for saying this, (ive never caught a marlin on stickbait by the way, its on the list) when we're talking about how "good" a topwater stickbait / popper rod is i personally don't think a marlin is a real test or indicator for alot of these rods in terms of a how well they go fighting most fish being as how it is a much different fight to say a large GT or XL kingfish in (generally) shallower water - marathon vs powerlifter type comparison.
